I bought a new Android and it's the first phone I've had with 5GHz WiFi in it. When I tested the speeds with Ookla's Speedtest app, I will get between 170-180 Mbps speeds, in the same room as the gateway (Arris TG1682G). I have 300Mbps service, which is sold as the 'Blast' tier in this area. But when I move into the kitchen, the download speed dropped considerably to 1Mbps (one).
I subsequently connected a co-branded ASUS/T-Mobile Personal CellSpot router (currently being using as a switch) and connected the phone to the router's 5GHz side. This router has three external antennas. In the same room as the router, the app displayed download speeds reaching 190Mbps and when the phone was brought into the kitchen again, the speeds to and from there were comparable (170-180Mbps). The distance between the two rooms is just under 20'.
I am questioning whether this is the norm with 5GHz WiFi and the Comcast gateways, considering all of the models have internal antennas.
FWIW, with previous phones that only had 2.4GHz WiFi in them, the fastest I could obtain from the same gateway was 56Mbps. Everyone around here has active 2.4GHz routers and/or gateways and I'm thinking that is the reason for the limited speeds on the 2.4 side.
Thanks in advance.
