[WiFi] Very poor WiFi range from Arris TG862

I'm in the process of moving to a new state, and am a new Comcast customer. I'm getting very poor WiFi range from the TG862G/CT gateway Comcast supplied. At 15 feet away, data throughput drops noticeably. At 20 feet, it's almost zero (useless). I've been trying to troubleshoot this issue myself. (When I called Comcast about it the first time they told me to call Dell. The second time I called the guy gave me a special number for "the WiFi department." That number goes straight to hold music (no prompts at all) and never picks up.) I installed inSSIDer and it shows that my TG862 is on channel 3. There are a couple of signals on channel 6 from neighbors, and they overlap channel 3. There are also a couple of neighbors' signals on channel 11. It seems clear to me that my gateway needs to be on channel 1. I've logged on to the router and found that only the most basic functions are exposed to my through the UI. Nothing advanced, like channel or power level, is there. How can I change the WiFi channel?
