[IPv6] IP addresses with IPv6

said by uid://628135 :I don't understand the difference between the test IPv6 Address and the WAN address. Would expect them to be the same&nbsp Here is a diagram that NetDog posted a while back. http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r28960304- When Comcast gives you an IPv6 address, you actually receive two items: 1) a WAN address - this address is on the Internet-facing network interface (the /128 WAN interface in the diagram). 2) A Prefix Delegation to use on your LAN (the /64 CPE PD Prefix Delegation in the diagram). (CPE = customer premises equipment) Your router assigns the WAN address to the Internet-facing network interface. Your router also creates LAN addresses from the prefix delegation and assigns them to the internal devices on your LAN. When a PC on your LAN connects to the speedtest site, the speedtest site sees a connection directly from the PC. This is a major difference between IPv4 and IPv6, as usually implemented on home networks. IPv4 had NAT which always surfaced the WAN's IP address when browsing sites. The internal IPv4 addresses used on the LAN were "translated" to the WAN address by the router's NAT facility. With IPv6, there is no NAT. The internal IPv6 addresses of the devices on the LAN are the addresses seen by the sites you visit.
