My girlfriend has Comcast home security and was using the rental modem from comcast. I bought her a Motorola modem and Cisco router to avoid using the junk from Comcast. After activating the modem and hooking the Cisco router to that, and the Home Security router to the Cisco, everything worked fine.
There were no issues besides the occasional need to reboot for about 2 months, but after returning from a week vacation, the Motorola modem can no longer connect to the Internet. After basic troubleshooting she called Comcast and they tried to tell her the modem was "not fully activated"? Is this even possible? Like I said, it worked fine (even hit the 50mbps she pays for) for a couple months.
They then proceeded to tell her the purchased modem will not work with the Home Security and she must use the junk modem they provide (at a monthly rental fee, of course).
Now I am pretty confident that this is a load of BS? Doesn't the home security just rely on an internet connection, and not a specific modem?
Is it possible they actually just un-provisioned the Motorola modem since we still have been too lazy to return the rented modem to Comcast? The funny thing is even after Comcast "re activated" the crap modem they rent, sure enough, the problem still persisted.
I am heading over there tonight to see what is going on with my own eyes, but I figured I would try to get a head start asking you folks!
Thank you.
