Moved into a new apartment recently and as the weather has gotten hotter the more frequent I lose connection throughout the day. My setup only has one splitter, tried three different ones. Also tired three different coax cables, and two different modems but nothing has helped. Reading around this board and other places I'm pretty sure the problem is not on my end. Perhaps poor wiring in the apartment or somewhere else along the line.
It seems the problem is my upstream. Most of the time it hangs out around 38-42 dB, based on the past few days I seem to lose connection when it rises to around 51dB. For me it seems like getting an amp would be the easiest solution. I found one recommendation for an amp, however the issue is it amplifies both the up and the downstream. My downstream is pretty steady throughout the day at 6-9dB. The review on amazon make it seem like the amp while it might fix my upstream issue, might cause a downstream issue instead.
This wouldn't be too big of a deal normally, but I work from home and have to connect to my work's VPN, so an untimely loss of connection is not good.
So my questions:
1.) Is there an amp that can only amplify the upstream but not the downstream? If so, any recommendations?
2.) If I get the amp and push my downstream power up over the recommended amount, what type of issue would this cause? Would it cause connectivity issues or would my internet just become slower?
3.) Did I misdiagnose my problem since a poor connection should result in a poor up and a poor downstream numbers?
Thanks!
