Apologies if I have posted this in the wrong group. Caps seemed like the most appropriate group, though this really has to do with usage allotments, not caps.
Several months ago, I started noticing where Comcast says I am using WAY more data than my router reports. This is getting me very close to my usage "allotment". For example, Comcast today says I have used 186GB this month as of October 12th. On October 8th, Comcast said I had used 151 GB. (these are from notification emails I received, though they do seem to agree with the online meter.)
My router (Asus N56U) says I use no more than about 3GB a day, and far less on most days. My latest numbers:
10/12 - .16GB
10/11 - .70 GB
10/10 - 1.21 GB
10/9 - 1.17 GB
10/8 - .55 GB
10/7 - 3.08 GB
10/6 - 1.56 GB
10/5 - .59 GB
10/4 - .12 GB
10/3 - .11 GB
10/2 - .12 GB
10/1 - .11 GB
Total per my router for October to date - 9.48 GB
Oddly enough, for September, Comcast reports 1GB used, while my router reports 3.98GB used. (I was out of town the entire month of September through October 4th. The only thing on the network was my security system.) So my router reported 4 times as much usage as Comcast for September!
I realize there are probably timing differences between what my router calls a day and what Comcast calls a day, but I would expect these to be close.
I didn't get much sympathy from Comcast when I called - check your Wi-Fi security...., our numbers are correct...., your router must be wrong.....) I insisted they open a ticket and check further, but no call back yet.
BTW, Motorola Surfboard SB6121 cable modem here, Personally owned, not leased from Comcast. Tech support seemed to have little sympathy for me given that I was using my own equipment.
Yes, I've rebooted everything. Yes, I have the latest Asus firmware on the router.
I realize consumer routers are buggy, but I'm having a hard time believing I'm using the amount of data Comcast is reporting. How do we know we can trust the data usage we are being billed for? At least on our cell phone bill, we get times and usage for the data. On our telephone long distance bill (for those that still have them), we get a record of the date/time called, duration, and place. Seems like for wired Internet, we just have to take our carrier's word for it. This didn't really matter until we started with allocations and caps.
Like most of us, I get a LOT of traffic that my router blocks. I've thought about whether I'm getting enough "hacking" on my router that it is driving the usage up. No clue if my router counts blocked traffic in the traffic monitor or not. But my system log shows less than one packet a minute being dropped, and I don't see any huge blocked packets, so this would not seem to be enough to create the problem.
Scratching my head! Any suggestions? Is anyone else having a similar problem?
Thanks in advance.
