I think I've had it with Apple's WiFi offerings. I wasn't happy with the Time Capsule and now the AX is acting up. I've already had it replaced once and this one is doing similar things. It just stops working. Sometimes it's just WiFi, sometimes only one band (I have 2 and 5 GHz separate) sometimes, like tonight, even hardwired stops routing. The light is green, Airport Utility can't see it, nothing can connect to the outside world. A power reset corrects it for a few days and then it's back to hanging again.
I've slightly elevated it above the shelf as it does seem to run hot. The room is not hot, 76 degrees or so. It has plenty of circulation available. I'm thinking of replacing it yet again.
But with what? I want something that works, period. I'd like logging to syslog (not in the AX) and port forwarding is absolutely necessary. A Guest network would be nice but not required. And VPN compatibility (L2TP preferred, PPTP OK, in and out, especially inbound) is also required. I don't need a DMZ. Separate 2 and 5 GHz would be good to keep the slower stuff from stepping on the faster stuff. Other bells and whistles like usage monitoring would be good. But reliability is key.
Price isn't too much of a concern if it will just do the job without having to babysit it.
