The new modem worked somewhat ok - for a little while. Then it was back to mediocre or worse wifi on various devices around the house.
So - instead of spending a lot of the rest of my life on the phone with Comcast - I set up a service call appointment on Wednesday. Don't have much to lose - except the cost of the service call (I was told a max of $15). And I've had some good luck with service calls. Last time a Comcast tech was here to address some service issues maybe 5 years ago - he found a huge fire ant nest in our cable box. The ants had chewed through some of the cables. I wouldn't have suspected that problem in a million years. And - even if I had discovered it - wouldn't have know how to deal with it.
Anyway - I have some issues for the tech person to explore. As follows.
Comcast installed a "booster box" when we built this house to amplify our cable connections. Whatever the thing was supposed to do - it's 20 years old now. Perhaps it's dying? Which might explain our intermittent wifi signals/connections. Worth checking out.
I checked for wifi network interference. Disabled our Rokus/Roku remotes (which were sending out very strong wifi signals) and our internet TV wifi (which was sending out a weak signal). There is one strong network left that I can't identify. It has a "HOME" prefix - which is usually a Comcast box. But it's not our Comcast box. It's sending out 5 bars - enough to compete with our network and maybe screw it up. But I don't know where it's coming from or why any neighbors 30+ feet away from the exterior walls of our house might be transmitting such a strong signal.
I asked that the tech come out with the Cisco modem with the bridge mode on/off button that supports my telephone. If I get one one of those - I'll buy a wireless router.
Any comments about these issues and any suggestions about other areas to explore would be appreciated. No matter how weird they might sound. After our "fire ant" problem - nothing sounds too weird to me! Robyn
