I noticed that my gateway now has an xfinitywifi hot spot being broadcast. I do not mind sharing my connection but on my terms and under my control,.
I did some digging around and found that you can turn off the hotspot from the "My Account" page. That's done.
Since I use my gateway in bridge mode (my own router/WiFi) I assumed that the WiFi on the gateway will be off, especially when the WiFi light on the front of the unit is off. But when I go in to the gateway's web page I see that the WiFi is still on. Apparently, even when you are in bridge mode the gateway still operates the WiFi radio under HOMExxxx, with this long password. I disabled that SSID as well.
Now I should have no WiFi of any kind on the gateway, but the status page still shows that the WiFi is active and a WiFi scanner shows that the gateway has a WiFi service without an SSID. What's interesting is that this WiFi comes on and off every few seconds..
I am mot sure why Comcast feels that they must have this WiFi active, and I wish I knew how to turn it off..
