Comcast is becoming annoying.
They've upped my Business HSI from $75/mo. to $103/mo. over five years. A 40% increase. The rate of inflation, during that same period, has been closer to 10%. They offered to knock $20/mo. off, if I signed a two-year contract, but then added the fine print: "The $20/mo. only applies to the first year."
Part of the fee increase has been the modem rental. Of course I must rent from them if I want a static IP. To add insult to injury: The modem rental is supposed to offset their cost for the occasional modem upgrade, but they would charge me a truck roll to do that.
I don't like being messed with My vendors that mess with me like this tend to become my ex-vendors.
Now I can't currently get rid of Comcast entirely, but...
My online IT colleagues are pretty impressed with DigitalOcean. I can get all I need for my modest hosting needs for $10/mo. No contract. I can downgrade to Comcast residential service, 25mb/s down, for $40/mo. on a one year contract, looks like.
So it looks like I can cut my Internet bill in less than half, and reduce my dependency on Comcast. Which, will, in turn, make it trivially easy to make an ISP switch when an alternative presents itself.
Looking for the downsides... Haven't been able to come up with any, so far.
