[Connectivity] Outages caused by older modem + new higher speeds

Hello, I own a Surfboard SB5120 that I use with Comcast High Speed Internet. I've been having intermittent problems with losing the internet connection. Sometimes power cycling the modem fixes it right away, sometimes it takes a while to come back. I've talked to Comcast twice. The first time the tech told me he was "conditioning" my line and I got connectivity back and it was fine for a few days. The next time I called I explained how it was becoming a chronic problem. She told me that it was because I didn't have a version 3 modem and they just upgraded the speeds. So whenever the faster speeds would come, my modem would choke and disconnect (my interpretation). I understand I probably need a newer modem for the faster speeds, but I'm on a budget. Does her explanation seem plausible to you?
