So I had expected the modem to act as a "firewall" of a sort. When I first setup up my connection a couple months ago I was assigned a local IP address from the 5341J and I could plug anything I wanted into the port and it would work.
Now, it's assigning whatever I have plugged into the Ethernet port as the external interface (public IP) causing me all kinds of issues. I can't plug anything else in without a reboot of the router & the router keeps needing to be rebooted as my laptop loses connectivity even without changing machines. I've called comcast and they "reconfigured" it when I told them there was no router or switch behind the modem but that doesn't seem to have done anything.
I'm thinking about putting a switch behind the modem for simplicity's sake so that I don't have to keep resetting the modem and ethernet cards. Now the question is will it work? I realize it's not a secure setup and eventually I plan on getting a router but until I have the time to research and get one my current setup is fine. I just need it to work consistently.
