Comcast is well known for tacking on all sorts of ridiculous fees, but as I've never personally been a Comcast customer, I wasn't aware how bad it was. My grandparents just moved and received a quote over the phone for a good TV package with all the regular channels, plus Starz and Showtime. They are getting 200/10 internet service, as well as unlimited phone. While those internet speeds are certainly much more than they need, $130 didn't sound bad.
Now when I took a look at the bill, there is another $40 of various charges added on:
HD Digital Preferred 220+ Channels
Blast!® Internet Blast!® Internet
XFINITY Voice Unlimited US & Int'l Calling
$129.99
Universal Connectivity Charge - $0.87
Regulatory Recovery Fees - $1.87
Regional Sports Fee - $5.00
Broadcast TV Fee - $7.00
---
Customer Owned Equipment - Owned
DVR Service - $10.00
DTA Additional Outlet Svc (HD) - $5.99
---
TV Franchise Fee - $5.56
TV FCC Regulatory Fee - $0.09
TV Sales Tax - $1.44
Voice 911 Fee(s) - $1.65
Voice State Sales Tax - $0.76
Fees $40.23
Total $170.22
I even helped them purchase a modem a year ago so that they could cut down on some of the cost, but it's crazy to see firsthand just how badly Comcast deceives customers. In this case their actual bill is 32% higher than what they were quoted for. I assume this is completely normal for Comcast but I just wanted to check because I'm pretty surprised this is legal.
