[Install] Installation Thursday. What do I need to know?

Just ordered the following: Xfinity Internet Performance 25 Internet $59.95 Speed INCREASE $10.00 Wireless Gateway $10.00 Promotional rate for 12 months ($29.96) And one-time install Install Fee Internet $89.99 This replaces my legacy ATT DSL which cannot go more than 1.5Mbs. The promised speed is "Up to 100Mbs." We have no other Comcast products. Use Dish for TV. I currently have a separate DSL modem and dLink router. I'm not sure if the Wireless Gateway includes a router or not. Any hints on what to expect when the installer arrives on Thursday? Any questions I need to ask? Any gotcha's to watch out for? I understand I can buy my own modem and return the leased one to Comcast. Is that true? Thanks in advance.

&nbsp interesting comments on cable futures ... Cable Nodes Becoming a Choke Point http://www.lightreading.com/cable/ccap-next-gen-nets/cable-nodes-becoming-a-choke-point/d/d-id/728754? ...Cable companies have been talking about a network architecture called node-plus-zero for several years, and finally some have begun deploying it, with Comcast and Cox leading the way. Node+0 is finally being deployed now because only recently did it become technologically and economically feasible, thanks to the introduction of a new generation of power amplifiers based on gallium nitride (GaN) (See Comcast Goes N+0 in Gigabit Markets.... Cable operators are also considering increasing the amount of spectrum in their networks, expanding from 1GHz to 1.2GHz. Plus, they're evaluating an architectural change referred to as remote PHY. Although all three are distinct technologies, they all place new demands on cable nodes, and for now there's no way to accede to all those demands simultaneously. .. It will probably be years before the Northeast region as a whole sees anything like that, being the Comcast step-child that we are... :) Edited title and group. ~sorto'

[Rant] Comcast Xfinity stupidity

My mother switched her landline from CenturyLink to Comcast Xfinity. Guy came out and "did the switch". Horrendous. First of all, Comcast assigned her with an out-of-the-blue random new phone number, replacing the one she had been using for 50 years. Fortunately, that was correctable, after I complained. But the installer plugged a basement landline phone into the router box, and decided he was done. Hey, pretty swift. The basement landline phone now can talk to the outside world. The rest of the phones in the house can't! So I connect the basement phone to the phone circuit for the house. Weird stuff happens. You talk to someone on the phone, and while you're talking, you hear a dial tone and or a message machine. The phone rings in odd bursts. Duh? It sounds like, well, there are TWO PHONE LINES connected! Yep, the jerk installer didn't DISCONNECT the CenturyLink line to the street and, of course CenturyLink is going to keep the account active until the end of the month. I call Comcast (fourth time in a week) ... "Hey, when can you guys come out to fix this?" They sweet talk me back with apologies and sympathy, and offer to get a guy out in THREE DAYS. Whaaaat? You've screwed up my phone system entirely, and you're going to walk away from it for three days???? They promise to call back in a half hour to negotiate a quicker visit. They never call back. So I just go outside and rip the CenturyLink wire out of my house line, and hook all phones up to the Comcast line. Everything is fixed. After this episode, my view of Comcast is that they are wholly incompetent. What a bunch of a&&holes.

[Speed] Comcast Gigabit Service

Just had the above installed yesterday. Download speed is great, about 960 MBS when I go right from the modem to one of my computers that has a gigabit Ethernet port that is part of the motherboard. When I check the speed the same way right from the modem with two computers that have Startech Gigabit Ethernet cards that I installed in them I only get about 500MBS. The two computers that I am using that I installed the cards in are older Dell Vostro 200's. Any ideas why I am only getting half the speed on these two computers with the Startech cards in them? Are the motherboards in the computers to old to handle the gigabit speeds? Upload speed is fine. As always thanks for every ones help. Marc

CM600 Overheat

I replaced an SB6141 last August with a CM600. It's located in an unheated garage, on the upper shelf in a cabinet. Until recently, it's operated fine. However, about a week ago it locked up - not accessible by web browser and not passing any traffic. Reset power without looking at it and everything was fine. One week later, same symptom. This time I looked at it and noted the power light was solid red, no other lights lit. Reset power and it works fine. Looking at the manual, solid red indicates an overheat problem and suggests making sure the modem is installed vertically. The shelf it's currently on has limited height, so it's laying flat. I'll have to do some reconfiguring to get enough room to have it vertical. It's strange that I'm seeing an overheat problem in the middle of winter in an unheated garage and not last August. Anyone else have a similar problem?

[Caps] Impossible to switch to Unlimited Internet after the 1st?

So, like a lot of people, I just got done using my "courtesy" two months of unlimited in December. We cut the cord to switch to Netflix+AmazonPrime+PSVue back in July of last year, and average about 1.7 TB of internet monthly (there are 6 people in my family - 2 adults and 4 teens, only one being an avid online gamer, along with 4 TVs). I called today to add the "unlimited" option to my package, and they informed me that since I called after the 1st, it wouldn't go into effect until 2/1, and I would be left paying ~140 in overages this month (if I don't severely limit my family's TV / gaming / internet usage). Does anybody know of a number / website I can go to that will let me add the unlimited option to my plan for January? I think its rotten that Comcast is allowed to "tax" users who have cut the cord, trying to force them back onto their TV services.

[NodePlus0] N+0 deployment activity

I would like to start a thread where we can keep track of the areas where Comcast has started deploying N+0 equipment. Earlier this year Comcast started pushing fiber deeper into the neighborhoods around me but close to 10 months after it was strung/buried it is still sitting unspliced and unlit. The comcast plant in my area is an old Adelphia region that is built on a 750MHz architecture so it's due for upgrade but it appears as if comcast is stalling on these upgrades for some reason. Has anyone else noticed any aggressive node splits and/or amplifier reduction in any other markets?

I have Comcast and live in Roseville California. I bought a sb6183 to resolve my issues but still have my sb6190, do you think if I switched back to my sb6190 I would get the new firmware relatively quickly? If so I can try it and let you know. I would like to get some use out of it. Thank you

[Moving] Why so difficult to disconnect Comcast service?

$

I've moved. I moved out of Comcast's area on Dec. 29th 2016. Before I left, I disconnected my modem (it is mine). I called Comcast on Jan. 3rd to have the service disconnected (I still have the lease on the apartment even though I'm not living there). I thought it was then taken care of. But, then I get a new bill for service from Jan. 28 through Feb. 27. So, I call on Jan. 25 and am told that they have no record of me calling to disconnect service. Which is odd, because when I log into my account, the account activity shows I called on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at 10:55am to Xfinity Retention Support. So, the nice lady says she will deactivate my service and back date it to Jan. 3rd. So, today I log on to see what's happening and I still see my internet service is active, with a notice that a technician is scheduled to come to the apartment tomorrow, and it still shows I owe for another month of service. So, I call again. Still the claim that they have no record of me ever calling to disconnect my service. Guy claims he can disconnect, but I'll still have to pay the $59.95. I tell him over my dead body. He hangs up on me. I call back. Lady says the service is already set for disconnection, the technician coming tomorrow is there to disconnect from the tap, nobody has to be there. She says she will refund the money I already paid for service I didn't use/ask for. Anyone want to take bets on whether I'll actually see a refund? Will the service actually be disconnected? Will I get a threatening letter for non-payment? This is so frustrating. I'm so thankful I do not live in a Comcast area any more. I swear, I'd completely do without internet service before I sign up with them again.

[DNS] who is the lesser evil?

$

We have been using Comcast's 75.75.75.75 and .76.76 dns servers. As of yesterday afternoon, several frequented became dns hijacked by CC, first pointing to no ip addresses at all, and as of this morning pointing to fake sites on different addresses. I have fixed the situation now, using split dns forwarding (which our local dns server supports) having the effected domains being sent to google's 8.8.8.8 dns server. But this brings up a larger question- other than obvious dns routes like google domains being resolved by 8.8.8.8 vs comcast/xfinity domains being resolved by 75.75.75.75, and problematic domains being sent to google's dns as needed, which would be a better choice for a 'default' dns server? In other words, who is the lesser of these two evils?

[Install] xfinity must be sure I won't cancel during the first 30 days...

Hi, I'm considering switching from uverse (18/1) to comcast (performance 25 + unlimited saver). they must be pretty sure I won't cancel during the first 30 days (they'll give me all costs including installation back). Is this generally true that people that make the switch are happy with the performance? the main reason for my switching is it's been 5 years and there's been no improvement in speed, still stuck at the same profile with nothing on the horizon. Best, jeff

[Rant] HD TV Quality - How Do They Get Away With It?

Do most people just not notice how bad their HD service looks? It's like a low resolution bit-starved YouTube video. I was watching an episode of Taboo last night and there was a scene in which I couldn't even make out the expression on Tom Hardy's face because it was so blocky. Looking at the service menu on numerous channels and my SNR is always 39db plus or minus 1db and have no errors whatsoever, so this must just be their compression.

Comcast says SB6141 isn't supported in my area anymore, true?

Our internet has been 'fine' for a long time. In the last month, it's gotten very flakey (goes up and down). I finally double checked all the connections, took WiFi out of the equation and it was still bad. I "chat" up Comcast and after many long delays the guy tells me 1) I reset you, you should be totally fine now 2) After telling him, the connection is still dropping, he tells me to do a "speed test". Which I do and it's meh. 3) He then says, oh you don't have a modem good enough for your speed, that's why it's flakey He then goes on to say that the SB6141 is no longer supported by "their platform". I feel like this guy is just trying to blow me off. Is he or is the SB6141 actually causing me problems? Edit: I live in San Jose in case that matters. Thanks!

[Business] New small business setup?

$

I'm working with a small store who has 4 POTS landlines now. One is used for outbound calls using a modem, one is a fax line, and two voice lines. Voice lines are in a hunt group, so calls roll from L1 to L2 if L1 is busy. They don't need "extensions" or the ability to transfer calls. They answer a call, may put it on hold, then may return to that call from another physical phone or on the same physical phone. This is a simple old school setup. What would Comcast offer them for a setup like this? I've seen more elaborate office business setups with extensions and the works; and have HSI at home so I know how that basic setup works with analog phones. I'm wondering if Comcast has anything in between those two setups, or will they just give them an HSI modem that support 4 analog phones and we plug everything in as it is connected to the POTS lines today? It might be nice to have a complete set of new phones, perhaps IP phones, to use in the store. Thanks.
