I live in Knoxville and Gigabit Pro has been available for a while, but I am pretty sure that my house is a bit too far and I'm certainly not going to pay the cost.
I found out this evening that my account is finally eligible for Gigabit service which is what I want. While the download speeds are nice, the main reason for wanting it is the upload speed. Basically ~950/~42 is better than 90/12 when it comes to speed.
I will continue using my router for now knowing full well that it will only get about 350mbps down. Do I have to use their router?
I don't want to use their router at all as mine is running dd-wrt and it set the way it needs to be. I plan to build a PFSense 10Gbe router and get a 10Gbe switch when Intel comes out with the new Xeon D SOCs later this year.
I try to keep up with all of the Gigabit threads here, but would like to ask a a few more questions below to those who have the service to make sure I am up to date and will know what is going on when I call to order (probably Monday). I will find out more when I call, but want to confirm what I think I know.
1. a. I will probably get a modem and still have not decided between Netgear or Arris. I understand that Comcast is giving out the Technicolor modem. However, I have read that after 72 hours, it can be replaced with the user's owned modem. I also understand that Knoxville has just now rolled out and that it may not be considered in a testing phase anymore. I also want to know if anyone has any comments about being forced to rent the Technicolor modem even though they tried their own modem (after 72 hours).
b. If they have to set up their router, can I take it out and use mine? If so, do I need to clone the mac address or can I use my router's?
2. I understand the pricing and see that my cost would be ~$140. I have read that a 3 year contract lowers that price to $70/month.
a. Has anyone not had the opportunity to get the discount because it was not available?
b. With regard to the 3 year contract, if one has to move during that period and moves into an area where
Comcast is NOT available, does Comcast let them out of the contract (I assume proper proof is required)?
c. I have read that the 3 year contract allows for NO cap. Is that true in your experience?
d. What are the installation charges if any?

[CustSvc] Trusing Comcast on Critical Services?
Recently, I've had issues with my cable. Comcast came over and said everything was fine but they discovered noise from my neighbors so they trapped the noise. (Noise of course is still there but I'll wait to see what happens there).
The problem is this. A lot of my neighbors are elderly who have a lot of dependency on their phone. From their medical devices to calling 911, their telephone (and soon, the internet) is their lifeline. But from the perspective of many local tech's, it seems ordinary, if not common here to just pull the plug and wait for them to call to fix things. That could be disastrous.
To be frank, after listening to this, the first thought in my mind was people could die.
For TV, sure fine. That's entertainment. But when you add things like Telephone and Internet - critical services to those dependent on it. They could die without it. And when the Comcast agent sells their phone and internet service, they act like it's equivalent to the local phone company. But I've never heard the local phone company casually talk about disconnecting a subscriber because of issues.
The local phone company workers I've had here are very serious about their jobs. I've had one check my line, drive off, and then come back an hour latter telling me about how he personally traced my problem from one box to another until he found what was broke, then he personally fixed it!
Is there a way to get Comcast to stop thinking of itself as an entertainment company or an ad company and more of a telecommunication company it wants to become?

[Connectivity] Internet Issues, Need Help Interpreting Error Log
Apologies for the extremely long post. I don't explain complicated or detailed things to others very well anyway, and on top of that, I wasn't sure what was and was not important….so I apologize in advance for that.
I have a new (3 weeks old) DOCSIS 3.1 CM, the Arris sb8200 and I cannot tell if the problem lies with the modem or with my signal/service since I've basically had one issue after another since installing Comcast Xfinity in February.
Of course, when you use your own equipment, the Comcast Agents blame ANY issues on "self installations" and "non Comcast equipment", so I'm running into that issue except for the absolutely miraculous times I've been allowed to speak to speak Tier 3 Techs here in the USA who have all had excellent home networking skills unlike the Techs who have been out to my house and the 'regular' call center agents I keep getting.
This latest problem became noticeable approx 10 days after the new Arris sb8200 had been running, I connected it March 16th and approx 7-10 days later noticed I had problems on my Comcast account and I was no longer "authorized" to use the xfinitywifi hotspots. The issue was escaped to Tier 3 and they discovered the Arris CM needed to be reprovisioned because it had been done incorrectly by one of these call center agents and it screwed up my entire account and kicked me off of the xfinitywifi hotspot service as well. Otherwise, the Arris sb8200 has seemed great - no issues. Then about a week ago (maybe 10 days) I began experiencing random signal outages like a brief "switching off and on" and a barely imperceptible signal issue while streaming that I only noticed on the smart tv (bc the screen is so large) that grew more pronounced and gradually became more frequent, until there was no doubt that I had a definite problem with my internet.
Here are the "symptoms" I experienced:
1. The internet seems to have "noise" or interference (flickers while streaming on the smart tv, lines, double images that flash quickly like 'blinking' or a strobe),
2. While streaming media content, and when it became really bad it began happening even while the screensavers were running (they're accessed via internet signal - on the Apple TV and on the Chromecast Ultra), the images/signal would become very poor quality then would resolve and become sharp, then became blurry/low quality and then resolve again, over and over,
3. The signal for my 2.4GHz network became weak (my 2.4GHz wifi network will show "yellow" or "weak" signal on my client devices which had only happened once before - when there was an extended outage in my area that allowed me to get online, but made the signal very weak and unstable until I got the call that it was restored and the weak signal indicator on my end disappeared),
4. The internet signal began to suddenly turn off/go out without notice and then come right back.
These issues are all new and all started at the same time.
I have attached a screenshot of the Event Log from the Arris sb8200 hoping that some experts here could help me interpret these and isolate the issue(s)/cause.
Comcast will not put me in touch with the Tier 2 or 3 Techs who can not only access these error logs, but who know how to interpret them and diagnose and resolve signal issues. Instead, they insist on sending a tech out tomorrow morning and so far, the techs who have come out for other reasons have NOT possessed any measure of skills other than connecting coax and turning on Gateways (including the very UN-professional Install that lasted over 4 hours and required ME to help the tech every step of the way and show him what to do and how to do it … I could have and should have just opened the cable box myself and connected everything. It made me angry and frustrated AND I got charged $60 for the "pleasure"). They had absolutely no experience with home networking outside of the tasks they repeat daily.
So, I'm worried that this tech tomorrow will be the same, I'll get charged, he'll insist I "need" a Comcast Gateway because I'm using my own equipment, and nothing will be fixed.
I can see the string of errors are basically several different examples of the same or similar issue that is repeating over and over until I power down and unplug the modem, finally getting it running smoothly …. then it happens all over.
Can anyone help me determine if the problem is the Arris modem? Did I get a bad modem on March 16th? Was it provisioned improperly (again!)? Am I experiencing some known error/incompatibility issue/glitch with this new DOCSIS 3.1 CM and Comcast?
Or is the problem in the signal itself?
(Btw, I also want to note that these errors happen nearly every single day but since I began monitoring the issue and physically unplugging the modem and forcing a reset, the most recent line items on the Event Log will disappear, going back to March 28th. I don't know why. But I watched as the errors for 4-1, 4-2, and 4-4 disappeared from the Event Log right before my eyes, immediately after I reset the modem. I was stupid for not taking screenshots before each reset, but I wasn't sure it was really happening (those listed errors disappearing) until the third day. All the missing errors were exactly the same group of three or so errors (the "No Ranging Response Received", the QAM/QPSK errors, and the SYNC errors).)
I could really use some in-depth help interpreting this and isolating the cause, even if it's just to determine that it IS or is NOT the Arris CM, because I know without a doubt that Comcast will send a tech like usual, who just hooks up cable, uses a meter to test signal strength, and reports back to Comcast and he will not even look at the Event Log to see all the errors and diagnose the problem because only the more senior level techs access those and know how to read them, etc.. I've already been 'round and 'round with the Comcast Agents in the overseas call center because they don't even understand the CONCEPT of the Event Log, much less how to read it. I mean….it says right at the top that the Event Log is to be shared with your ISP to diagnose signal problems. I want to scream.
Attached are screenshots of the latest Event Log (the errors after March 28th are either undated or were removed after I reset the modem as mentioned above) and the Status page.
Thank you SO MUCH in advance for any help you can possibly give me!

:
Comcast confirmed plans to launch a wireless service combining the strengths of its vast Wi-Fi network and its MVNO deal with Verizon back in September. The launch has been slated for sometime later this year.
:
Last week, FierceWireless reported that Comcast is quietly partnering with Apple as it prepares to launch wireless service under the brand Xfinity Mobile: http://www.fiercewireless.com/wireless/comcast-quietly-taps-iphone-ahead-launch-xfinity-mobile
The cable giant’s name has been added to behind-the-scenes - but publicly available - code that lists carrier bundles for the iPhone. The list of carrier bundles is used by iTunes and iPhones to determine whether the iPhone’s SIM is supported by a service provider with whom Apple has an agreement, then provisions the phone accordingly.
The iPhone's latest list of carrier bundles includes "Verizon_Comcast_LTE_US," and mentions the service "Xfinity Mobile." A source pointed out the reference to FierceWireless, and a different source with knowledge of the matter confirmed that Comcast has indeed partnered with Apple ahead of the launch of Xfinity Mobile. [CustSvc] Serviceability / Construction Ticket Open since Feb 10th 2017
I have a ticket open with Comcast to get me a quote to run service to my address. I was told that the service stops several houses away from mine, and I would have to pay a fee to get the lines run to my house. I am willing to pay a fee, but I would need to know how much. I have called or walked-in to Comcast at least once a week since the ticket was opened, and all they keep telling me is that my ticket is still open, but there has been no changes. I would like to have an estimate on how long it will take them to get me an estimate, and how long until I might have service. I have not received a single phone call from anyone at Comcast regarding this issue. How do I get in touch with anyone who can resolve this?

[Firmware] Arris Event Log Question
How does Arris modems log events in Event Log? Is it suppose to overwrite old events of the same type?
For example, this timeout error: Critical Event, 'Started Unicast Maintenance Ranging - No Response received -T3 time-out"
It's something like Fri Apr 01 00:00:00 2017. Then the time is updated to Fri Apr 01 01:00:00 2017. Then it is updated to Fri Apr 01 07:00:00 2017.
It's the same entry, but the time changes. If I wasn't looking at the modem at Fri Apr 01 00:00:00 2017, I wouldn't have known about the T3 event then and just known about the last one.

[Connectivity] Subscriber Owned Modem with static IP's
We have Comcast Business service with 5 static IP's because we run a web and Exchange server. We just purchased a TP-Link TC-7610 modem to replace the Comcast supplied one that they charge $15 a month to rent. After swapping modems we were having trouble getting the new one to provision so we called tech support. With a laptop plugged into the modem in a couple of minutes we were connected. We hung up and switched the modem to our network. No connection. We quickly discovered that tech support had provisioned the new modem with a DHCP issued address in spite of having all our account in front of him. We called back. The next tech said that Comcast could not connect to a customer owned modem to provision with static IP's. This seems completely false since they had already connected to the device and I don't know of any reason why the TC-7610 could not be provisioned with static IP's. Has anyone else had this problem? Anyone know of any reason why the TC-7610 can't be so provisioned?
Thanks.

[Connectivity] Accessing Comcast Business router from behind Cisco router
Hey everyone,
I have recently had an issue come up that has me stumped. Our business has 2 facilities, both facilities use Comcast and there business router and both have a cisco router connected to the Comcast router for our internal networks. From within our internal network, I have always been able to type in 10.1.10.1 and login to the Comcast business router and both facilities. About a month ago, I lost that function at one facility and now I have lost it at the other facility. I can plug a laptop directed to the back of the Comcast router and login that way using 10.1.10.1 but I need to be able to do it like I use to.
Has anyone experienced this issue or have an idea why I can no longer do this while behind our cisco router? Nothing in the cisco router configs has changed. It worked one day and not the next.
I called Comcast but the tech sent me an email on how to change the password...lol yeah that helped a lot.
Any help is much appreciated.

[Equip] DOCSIS 2 eMTA with DOCSIS 3 Modem
I can't get a straight answer from Comcast about this, so I'm hoping someone here can clue me in. I'm trying to help my dad with his Comcast account. He has a Triple Play with 200Mbps down and he doesn't want to continue leasing a modem. I was going to get him a SB6190 (I'm aware of the Puma 6 issues, it appears those might be resolved soon, right?) and a Netgear AC1750 router. If anyone has any thoughts about that part, I'll hear it, but my real question is about the eMTA.
Comcast has told me it's possible to use a standalone eMTA, and I'd like to use an old Arris TM502G I have. What they haven't been able to give me a straight answer about is whether or not the TM502G will work as a standalone eMTA. They keep talking about it ONLY being a DOCSIS 2 modem, I asking how that matters if I'm only going to use it as an eMTA? So, can anyone tell me if they know whether or not this particular eMTA will work as a standalone, and in general, is there is a problem having a DOCSIS 3 modem with a DOCSIS 2 standalone eMTA?
Thanks!

[Security] Being DDoS'd and have a question.
I'm no expert, but I understand enough about networking to get by. Since 1996, I've been DDoS'd over the years about 15 times. It's pretty unremarkable and boring, but when I learned how to change my IP address and come right back, I felt I was now immune to being DDoS'd and I was for several years, but now that doesn't work anymore and I don't know why.
I have an SB6141 cable modem connected to an ASUS RT-N66U with Shibby Tomato firmware on it. Changing the IP is as simple as going to Advanced -> MAC Address -> selecting a random one, saving, and then rebooting the cable modem. But this no longer works. Even after closing the software the attacker used to get my IP address (in this case, Skype) before rebooting the modem, the attacks can continue any time he presses the big red button. So with my little knowledge of networking, I assume he has the actual, real mac address of my modem somehow since he can attack me even without knowing my new IP.
The only way to avoid further attacks is to set my cell phone as a WiFi hotspot and use that instead, or connect to a local Xfinity Wifi using my username/password. So that means the 6141 modem I have is completely compromised? The guy can attack me anytime from this point forward?
I guess I can try plugging in my old cable modem, but it would be great to know how the guy is able to do this when in the past this hasn't been the case, and if there's something I can do to prevent it from occurring in the future.
There are so many forum posts online asking how to change your IP address, but apparently some people have the power to still attack you once they get your IP address just once. I don't get it.

http://speedtest.comcast.net/ now redirects to http://speedtest.xfinity.com/ which is an HTML5 test and not like the old adobe flash test, based no doubt on the beta that Comcast has been testing for quite awhile. Once you run it 1 time, you can select which test server you want to use(pick one near you) and whether you want to use IPV4 or IPV6 protocols.
Try it out; uses HTML5 protocol instead of Adobe Flash code. That means it should run on smartphones and on Apple's iPhone & iPad too.
Obviously you will get much better speeds over a landline connection at home( Comcast or Verizon or AT&T)or over WiFi at a restaurant or bar. If you test over your cellphone LTE connection it will be slower and will use up your data cap.

[Price] Considering XFINITY, but have questions.
Hello!
I am currently on a 3Mbit DSL by Windstream and ... well, 3MBit these days is slow. Very slow.
I am currently getting a package from Windstream that includes Dish Network, and the whole package is getting out of this world at $198/mo.
Until this past year, we had no cable options as there was no kind of cable service anywhere near our house. This past year, Comcast strung a cable along the road where we live (it's about 100 yards away from the house).
We've been tossing the idea back and forth, to wait for one of their 2-year lock-in promos, but the question keeps coming up, "What is it AFTER the 2 year lock-in?"
Well, I did some googling and I am no step closer to answering that question than when I started. I've seen all kinds of numbers being thrown about, and to be honest that's a pretty important piece of information I do kind of need to know, but for some weird reason, it's hard to find average numbers online, not even ballpark figures.
And from what I've read from a number of articles, Comcast requires you to give you a SSN before they'll even give you any information, which I don't understand why they need a SSN just to tell you how much service would cost after the 2 year lock-in. I know that rates would go up between now and then, what I'm more looking for is what does the average Triple-Play (Phone/TV/Internet) cost these days as a BASIC package (we don't need hundreds of channels, nor do we need 100Mbit+ ... 20-50 would do just fine), and how much it goes up per year on average. If I knew that a basic package was like 180 last year and it's like 190 this year, then I can count on an increase of 20-25 over two years. etc.
Also... how do the incoming connections work? Is there a box/router/modem for both the TV and the internet, or is there one singular box that handles both, and you plug a router into this one singular receiver box? We'd need to know how to plan this ahead of time, because the main TV and the internet equipment are in two different rooms, and whether or not we'd need to run a LAN cable out to the TV room, etc.

Upstream is marginal
So, Ill start by saying that im a D* technician, and i've installed everything up to comcast's spec as far as my modem's connection goes. Im sure most cable techs assume a crap shoot, but i can re assure, 20 years in the field goes far enough for me to know what im doing here =D
I just activated a SB6141 from a SB6121 and switched to the 150/20 plan. My upstream power has been sitting around 54-55dBmV. It has lost sync once. My connection is quite simple. Quad RG6 from modem, directly through an exterior wall, to a ground block. Ground block directly to the tap with an aerial drop.
I'd love to call comcast and just convince them to run me a new drop and not beat me around the bush, but who knows maybe its an issue at the tap.
What would one recommend here?
