FYI - We're working on a new tool to try and take some guesswork out of connection troubleshooting. We're launching a beta today - and we really want your feedback because we know there are bugs to squash! ;-)
Any time someone comes in here with speed issues, the first steps are always to check your signals. And so we are attempting to automate that process, so you don't have to check your local modem page and interpret RF levels on your own. We also check if your device is end-of-life, and whether your speed tests are in line with the speed for which you are paying. We then try to guide you to an avenue that will solve your issue with minimal effort.
The beta test tool is called Speed Experience (https://speedexperience.comcast.net/). You sign in with your Xfinity account; so you don't need to be home to use this tool.
If you are having issues and would like to give it a try, please do. There is a form at the bottom where you can send us feedback about the tool.
This is a beta, so there will be bugs! If you get a message that we couldn't detect your device or your signals, please take a moment to use the feedback form at the bottom and let us know.
We are working on adding some more features to it, including WiFi signal issues and automatic submission of your problems to a team that can resolve them (so you don't even need to call or chat).
In the backlog, I have:
1 If the RF levels are out-of-spec, automatically create a ticket rather than driving the customer to chat/call.
2 If the customer has a wireless gateway, show wireless network attributes (SSID name, channel, etc.) and make WiFi-improvement suggestions.
3 The results page should provide a permalink, so the customer can share the results.
Thanks for the help testing this tool!

[Equip] New Comcast XB6 Gateway
Hello Everyone:
Just had the above installed tonight. I have two questions, is there provisions for setting up a VPN and could you install a backup battery in the modem. Is it he same ARRIS Battery that is used in the XB3

Huge amount of upstream traffic
Recently I noticed that my internet usage is double what it has been. And whats really strange is that most of the usage is upstream, not downstream and occurring in the middle of the night! What could possibly be going on? I have examined the system log of my router and there are all sorts of messages during these intensive upstream periods. I have no idea what it means. Can someone look at the log below and let me know if it provides a clue? Thanks

Does the XB6 come with the extenders?
Do you have to rent them?
Can you buy them?
Has anyone actually seen one other than in a news article photo like this? https://www.cedmagazine.com/news/2015/05/comcast-announces-sleek-new-gateways-2016

I’ve attached screenshot of my modem’s levels as well.

[Activate] Comcast Xfinity Refusal to Activate SB6141
Comcast's modem activation system and several reps would not activate my perfectly good modem. They gave a nonsense story about it being active on another account. After several days and many calls to tech support they apparently caved and activated it (without letting me know). I found someone who had a similar experience http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r30122375-Equip-Discussion-about-Comcast-EndOfLife-EOL-yes-or-no-Modems. Has anyone else been given the runaround like this?

[Signals] Packet Loss - Signals look fine & Arris SurfBoard SB8200 modem
Exactly 3 weeks ago on June 8, 2017, I replaced my Arris SB6190 DOCSIS 3.0 modem with the Arris DOCSIS 3.1 SB8200 modem, I have been having timeouts browsing the internet as many connections will timeout and require that I reload before it will work properly including posting here where I hit the Post Now! button, it just will say waiting for connection in the browser for 1+ minute until I hit Post Now! again before it will post. Even with speedtests, I was getting 50Mbps down/11Mbps up most of the time and about 5% of the time, it will be somewhere in the 140Mbps down/11Mbps up range. This is on a BlastPro 200Mbps/10Mbps connection here in Comcast San Francisco, California. I have already resetted the modem to factory defaults and have tried directly connected via Gigabit Ethernet using CAT6 cable to a computer with the same results. I had confirmed with netcool within 2 hours on the same day I began using the modem and he said it was provisioned correctly and the signal levels look good. The SB6190 did not have the same issues but the speedtests were 80% in the 180Mbps down/11Mbps range but that was when it was running on 24 channels down/4 channels up. Now it's 32 channels down/4 channels up and 1 DOCSIS 3.1 down channel. And we all know the SB6190 has other known issues that the SB8200 does not have. Even on this side, as I have posted status pages before, the signal all looks good even though it reports a T3 timeout about once every 2 days per the error logs.
So on June 15, 2017 - I wrote on the Comcast Direct part of the Comcast/XFinity forums here on DSLReports.com describing the problem and the response was:
"Hello {first name} looking at the signal on your modem I confirmed there is a high amount of resets and highT3 timeouts count which can be related to a RF problem can you please confirm connections from the back of the modem as far back as you can. Thank you"
All the connections look fine to me as there is the underground cable from the underground tap which is in the private street in the back of the house to the grounding block at the back right corner of the house and then cable from the grounding block going up the roof and then down to the left front outside wall of my living room going into the coupler and then the cable directly to the modem. The coupler and cable directly to the modem was professionally installed by a Comcast Business Internet contractor in February 2016 before I switched to Comcast Residential High Speed Internet. Everything before the coupler back to the tap is atleast 10 years old if not longer.
I wrote back and basically the Comcast representative did not respond until 4 days ago saying there has been a huge increase in T3 timeouts and they like to send a technician to check the signal which was scheduled for yesterday at 1PM-3PM.
The technician arrived yesterday near the end of the appointment time window at 2:50PM and first checked the signal from the modem which looked good but was on the telephone with his manager who said there were 100s of resets during the past 3 days while it only shows 2 in my error log so they checked the signal again at the outside of the living room wall and then at the grounding block where the underground cable from the underground tap comes in and they all look good and then we went to the underground tap which feeds 3 houses, mines and my neighbors and basically, instead of the wires deep, it was all on top of the solid dirt and it appears one of the ports on the tap is broken so what was done was the following:
The cable from the grounding block in the rear right corner of the house going up the roof and down the left front outside wall of the house was replaced with a new one and the old one was removed while the coupler was also replaced. I do not have a photo of what it looked like on the grounding block side before the cable was replaced. He had a fellow co-worker came over who agreed that the broken port on the tap could cause ingress even though the signal looks fine. So what is being done is that Comcast Construction will fix the tap as soon as today while they will run a new underground cable from the tap to the grounding block, the later which will take about 7 business days. Now a question, is there a such thing as a defective grounding block since I thought if it is old, it might not pass all the frequencies.

I'm having issues with a wireless camera recording slightly choppy videos and some live view connectivity issues. Speed test/ping/quality over Ethernet seem good. I set up a smoke ping on my gateway IP and see some packet loss but not sure how to diagnose further? Can anyone help? Thanks

[Connectivity] CBI Coax vs Fiber
Business relocating to newly constructed building at end of cul de sac in three months. Comcast site survey says either coax or fiber. Go with coax at standard rates or fiber for substantially more. Comcast will cover construction with a commitment. I am assuming there are SLAs available for the fiber, but instead of assuming anything else I'll just ask here.
From a technical perspective why would 100/100 fiber be preferable to 1000/35 coax or even a pair of 150/20 coax? Is the bandwidth really dedicated?
Big warehouse, some offices. VoIP phones. 20-25 people. Email, web-surfing, cloud-based business apps. No persistent video streaming or other high bandwidth applications. Backups to cloud-based providers overnight. Metro Atlanta.

I called Comcast twice they both said they don't even see the cable modem connecting to the system. Both times they insisted there was something wrong with the CM and to return it. So I'm doing that just to prove them wrong. I tried a number of things including not plugging in the Ethernet and power cycling the modem manually many times and let it sit for about a hour and a half cycling through. The modem is supported in our area on the Comcast device support page.
I was told in this thread (I am the Anonymous user) (http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r31304106-~time=1489503828?r=151#31304106) that it may be a problem with Cisco CMTS units (much like the Netgear D3.1 CM issues with the CM1000's). I Verified and the CMTS Mac address is indeed Cisco owned. Though I'm not sure what model I am on. There was a mention that someone named "netcool" on these forums has a fix (http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r31303566- & http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r31303256-) (I'll try PMing netcool also). Is there anyway that can be applied in our area also? Or is there a way I can call Comcast and not get level 1 support that can fix this issue?
UPDATE: My issue was resolved by the workaround the user "netcool" applied to my area's CMTS. Latest info is there are plans for a more permanent fix in the works.

[Equip] Modem Upgrade
Received a notice today from Comcast that they are upgrading my Internet tier plan (I'm on 75/10, I believe it's going to 100/10) and that my modem needs to be upgraded to support the new speeds. I have the Motorola SB6121.
I'm looking at DOCSIS 3.1 modems and found two:
The Motorola Ultra Fast DOCSIS 3.1 MB8600 - https://go.rr.cx/a9Ck385qh
The Surf Board SB8200 DOCSIS 3.1 - https://go.rr.cx/m1Ho325ye
I've always used Surfboard modems since day one (except for a stint with the Linksys CM modem. Ah the good ole days!).
Price point they are ~$30 different (The Motorola is more expensive). Aside from price, is there any thing specific that I should look for? Would the SB 8200 be enough?
More importantly, do I even need to upgrade my modem to get 100/10?
Here's what I'm getting now for speed:

Thanks for any input!

[Plan] If I cancel Comcast TV will they screw up my internet?
My only option for reasonable internet speed is Comcast cable internet and my internet connection is essential.
I also currently have TV service with them. The price of the TV service is outrageous and I want to cancel it.
I have this fear that if I do they'll sabotage my internet for revenge / because they don't care as much about keeping it working / to make me get TV service again. Wondering if anyone has experience with this scenario that can shed light on what to expect. Is my fear unfounded?
Thanks!

[Plan] Xfinity Prepaid Internet
I am trying to find out more about Xfinity Prepaid Internet. Their webpage doesn't allow me to check my address for service. Does it just simply using regular Xfinity cable internet service? I read something about a connection to Boost Mobile, but I assume that Xfinity Prepaid Internet isn't Sprint cellular data, is it?

[CustSvc] Washington state to sue Comcast over ...
...'pattern of deceptive practices'

press conference at 10:30 am PDT
Can't find much other info at this point (Most of the WA AG actions are leaked/foreshadowed by investigative processes made public long before court action. )
speculative edit: $100 million for 1.8 violations ($55 each) for 500k accounts ($200 each), must be fairly big...maybe broadcast tv fee(was $3.25 per month now $5) or HD technology charges($10/mo)? Telcodad called it below.
This is an election year (primary is tomorrow) but this AG hasn't floated any false investigations yet, and isn't under any real threat from 1 opponent who bothered to file for office.
