Next Gateway XB8 - Technicolor CGM4981COM Wi-Fi 6E

$

Looks like we have a new DOCSIS gateway by Technicolor on the horizon. A new listing went up today mentioning a "CGM4981COM." Not much info about it as the documents are early, but the testing reports that it is tri-band with Wi-Fi 6E. This device has 4x4 AX on both 2.4 and 5 GHz like the current XB7, except with 4 more separate antennas for Wi-Fi 6E support. https://fccid.io/G954981X This gateway hasn't been tested for DFS support yet. Not sure why, but I also see it hasn't been really tested for 6 GHz either, like another ISP device that apparently is Wi-Fi 6E. The label on the bottom is oddly shaped, so I would expect the device to be a little strange as well.

[Plan] Is Comcast changing upload speed?(non-midsplit)

I am just checking the Comcast plan around my area about mid-split deployment and noticing something on upload speed. Based on screenshot, it doesn't have mid-split, but when I check 1000Mbps and 1200Mbps plan, I notice the upload speed is 100 and 200. I am wondering if Comcasting is changing the plan again or this is just website error?

Random DHCP Lease Time

Came to realize my DHCP lease time keeps changing randomly and drastically. Is this normal or does it suggest something is going on? It was setting the lease for about 4 days a few weeks ago. Then I noticed it went down to 4 hours, 2 hours, 1 hr 59 mins, 59 minutes. Then down to 1 hour, 59 minutes now it’s back to 15 hours. Seems really random.

As mentioned in this recent DSLR news item https://www.dslreports.com/shownews/Comcast-Prepares-For-Mid2017-Wireless-Service-Launch-139048 , Comcast is planning a mid-year launch of their wireless service. Comcast announced today that they will be providing the details on this new service on Thursday: Comcast to Host Analyst Event to Discuss Launch of Mobile Initiative Comcast press release, Business Wire - April 3, 2017 http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20170403005198/en/Comcast-Host-Analyst-Event-Discuss-Launch-Mobilequote:On Thursday, April 6, 2017, Comcast will host an analyst event to discuss the details of its previously announced mobile initiative, which utilizes an existing MVNO agreement. Senior members of the Comcast leadership team will participate in the event. ...There is also this FierceCable article today about it: Comcast sets Thursday meeting with investors to discuss wireless launch By Daniel Frankel, FierceCable - April 3, 2017 http://www.fiercecable.com/cable/comcast-sets-thursday-meeting-investors-to-discuss-wireless-launchquote:Some of the telecom industry’s most closely guarded secrets could finally be revealed Thursday, when Comcast hosts what it calls an “analyst event to discuss the details of its previously announced mobile initiative.” : Comcast confirmed plans to launch a wireless service combining the strengths of its vast Wi-Fi network and its MVNO deal with Verizon back in September. The launch has been slated for sometime later this year. : Last week, FierceWireless reported that Comcast is quietly partnering with Apple as it prepares to launch wireless service under the brand Xfinity Mobile: http://www.fiercewireless.com/wireless/comcast-quietly-taps-iphone-ahead-launch-xfinity-mobile The cable giant’s name has been added to behind-the-scenes - but publicly available - code that lists carrier bundles for the iPhone. The list of carrier bundles is used by iTunes and iPhones to determine whether the iPhone’s SIM is supported by a service provider with whom Apple has an agreement, then provisions the phone accordingly. The iPhone's latest list of carrier bundles includes "Verizon_Comcast_LTE_US," and mentions the service "Xfinity Mobile." A source pointed out the reference to FierceWireless, and a different source with knowledge of the matter confirmed that Comcast has indeed partnered with Apple ahead of the launch of Xfinity Mobile. Is there anyway to tell if an area has mid-split without having service? I know you used to be able to see if Gigabit Pro was available using the availability tool but it looks like they removed that from what I can see. Thanks!

As mentioned in another thread (https://www.dslreports.com/forum/r33763199- ), Comcast announced today that it will begin rolling out DOCSIS 4.0, with symmetrical speeds up to 2 Gbps, to select neighborhoods in Colorado Springs, CO, and expects to also to roll it out to "select areas" of Atlanta and Philadelphia before the end of this year: Comcast to Deliver Multi-Gig Symmetrical Speeds in World-First DOCSIS 4.0 Deployment Comcast press release - October 12, 2023 https://corporate.comcast.com/press/releases/comcast-multi-gig-symmetrical-speeds-world-first-docsis-4-deploymentquote:Comcast announced that next week it will begin to introduce the first residential customers in the world to next-generation Internet powered by DOCSIS 4.0 technology. The latest version of DOCSIS technology is a giant leap forward in Internet connectivity that can deliver multi-gigabit symmetrical speeds to customers over the connections that already exist in tens of millions of homes in Comcast markets across the country. As a part of the launch, Comcast will introduce a new portfolio of symmetrical products for residential customers. Comcast will begin rolling out DOCSIS 4.0 to select neighborhoods in Colorado Springs, CO, and will launch new markets throughout the country over the next few years. Select areas of Atlanta, GA and Philadelphia, PA are expected to begin rolling out before the end of this year. “The ubiquity of our network, which is already accessible to tens of millions of homes, provides us with an incredible opportunity to bring multi-gigabit upload and download speeds to communities across the country with the scale and efficiency that no other provider can replicate,” said Dave Watson, President & CEO, Comcast Cable. “Our connectivity experience, powered by the Xfinity 10G Network, will allow us to deliver speeds up to 10 Gbps over our traditional network to virtually all our customers, plus even better reliability, lower latency, and the best in-home WiFi coverage.” We’re entering the next phase of this industry leadership with DOCSIS 4.0 technology to introduce X-Class Internet products that will revolutionize the way our customers get online today and many years into the future. Introducing X-Class Internet Symmetrical 10 Gbps service based on fiber-to-the-home technology is already available in all of Comcast’s markets, and as part of its continued network evolution and the introduction of DOCSIS 4.0, multi-gig symmetrical speeds are rolling out. New and existing residential customers connected via DOCSIS 4.0 will have access to Comcast’s newly introduced next-generation X-Class Internet portfolio. X-Class speed tiers include X-300 Mbps, X-500 Mbps, X-1 Gbps and X-2 Gbps upload and download speeds and low lag for the ultimate live sports streaming experience on Peacock, smooth connections on work calls, and ultra-responsive gaming. “This is an awesome achievement and I’m incredibly proud of the team of brilliant technologists here at Comcast who have worked relentlessly to make DOCSIS 4.0 a reality ahead of schedule,” said Elad Nafshi, Chief Network Officer, Comcast Cable. Full Duplex DOCSIS Comcast’s path to DOCSIS 4.0 leverages breakthrough network technology known as “Full Duplex” that utilizes the same network spectrum to dramatically increase upstream speeds without sacrificing downstream speeds. : Xfinity customers in Colorado Springs will be able to sign up online for the new DOCSIS 4.0-powered Internet plans.

New Fiber Runs?

Came home to find out what I’m assuming are more contractors for Xfinity stringing out fiber around town. I noticed this thing on the pole in front of my home. While it may have been there awhile and I’m just noticing now I don’t know. But it looks new. Not even sure if it’s Comcast or who. Does anyone recognize this device?

[Plan] Promo ended, dropped to 500/100

So my $85 a month 1200/200 promo ended. New price was $121. I checked the site and 500/100 was available for $55 if I do a year contract. Switched instantly. I doubt I will even miss the higher speed. I never really saw 1200mbps in real world downloads, only speedtests. In fact I think the ONLY place I got close to full speed was Steam downloads, and I don't download/install huge games often enough to be worth the money. So congrats goes to Comcast, getting $30 less a month from me because they decided to be greedy and not extend my $85 a month pricing for gigabit. Anyone else go through this crap recently? I wish Comcast would stop playing these games and just do ONE price like some other ISPs do.

Lost internet - strange msgs in log. What happened?

$

This afternoon (at the worst possible time work-wise, lol), I lost my internet for about 15 minutes. The Xfinity app via cellular said the modem was offline, restart it. I did not. I got involved in a phone call/mtg, when it was done, about 15-20 minutes later, everything was up. I am wondering what happened? This is a 2000/200 Comcast service, modem is a Netgear CM3000. First I checked the modem - the modem did not power cycle or restart, based on uptime reported. There were a few small differences: Downstream: the correctibles/uncorrectibles errors are all 0, as I rebooted the modem about 2 days ago (which was the uptime reported). SNR are all around 44, the same as before. Power levels are all 3.2-4.8, before they were probably 4-6.8. Upstream Bonded power levels the same as before, 43-44. Downstream power 4.5, was 6.5. SNR the same though, around 43. Upstream OFDMA power is 37.8, what it's always been (37.8-38.0) Then I checked the log, and around the time of the failure there are a lot of errors. Normally there are no errors other than maybe 1-3 T3's a day. Some I am not familiar with, like SYNC Timing Synchronization failure, and RNG-RSP CCAP Commanded Power in Excess. It almost looks like an error caused it to restart (a group of the messages look the same as a restart) yet no evidence of restart in the uptime number on the main page. What do you think happened - does this look like Comcast replaced a component or something in the neighborhood, any way to guess? how many upload chanels shoud I have?

Comcast recently set me up on the Gigabyte Tier Internet service. Download speeds are fine but uploads seem capped in the 20's (20-25Mbps). Supposedly (and according to the Comcast rep), I should be getting the newer upload speeds of up to 100Mbps. My cable modem is an Arris SB8200 and when I looked at the bonded upstream channels, I only see 4 of them. The modem should be able to handle 8 but I'm not sure what the correlation to speed vs amount of channels is (or if there is one). This is what the stats look like currently for the Upstream channels: Channel Channel ID Lock Status US Channel Type Frequency Width Power 1 1 Locked SC-QAM Upstream 16400000 Hz 6400000 Hz 42.0 dBmV 2 2 Locked SC-QAM Upstream 22800000 Hz 6400000 Hz 42.0 dBmV 3 3 Locked SC-QAM Upstream 29200000 Hz 6400000 Hz 43.0 dBmV 4 4 Locked SC-QAM Upstream 35600000 Hz 6400000 Hz 43.0 dBmV Should I be seeing more bonded upstream channels?

Brand new greenfield build in Connecticut. My town now has Altice Fiber, Xfinity Fiber, Frontier Fiber, and GoNetSpeed (fiber). My street is underground so I only have fiber from Altice and Xfinity. Gonetspeed does not do underground builds. Frontier skipped my street so I only have access to their copper infrastructure. Attached are photos. Speedtests are 400/400 wireless eventhough I’m next to their gateway. Might need to order a new router

[Install] XFinity customers with Netgear CM3000 modems on mid-split

I thought I would start a thread on how the CM3000 holds up since it's a new modem but on the Comcast list. I got mine today, it activated in about 12-15 minutes through the app on my iPhone conected to cellular. When it was completed, I did not have the higher upload speeds. But as I was warned I might need to do, I power cycled the modem, and when it came back up, I had the new speeds! So I went from 1200/35 -> 1200/200. THe OFDMA channel is of course locked again. FW version is 5.01.02. I'll post back in a few days, everything looks about the same power wise as the CM2000 and 2050V. I did initially see a T3 and several CM_STATUS messages, but after a power cycle about 20 minutes after things settled down it's been clear for 20 minutes - so I guess that was related to the startup. I'll be watching the error cunts and log.

Signal Level Review / Reducing # of splitters

$

I have a question about the signal quality coming into my home. My home is pre-wired with coaxial jacks throughout, none of which are used for anything. There are two splitters between the main line coming into the home and the Xfinity modem. I’ve shared signal levels in Screenshot1. After removing the big splitter (such that there’s only one splitter between the main line coming into the home and the Xfinity modem), I see the signal levels in Screenshot2. It looks like downstream power levels decreased and upstream power levels increased. Based on my read of the 'what should my signal levels be' thread (https://www.dslreports.com/faq/16085) it looks like I've created a worse outcome for myself by removing one of the interim splitters. Is this accurate? Why is this? Is there any new configuration I ought to try, or is it really ideal to leave the two splitters between the modem and the main line?

[DOCSIS] CMTS questions

$

I have a few questions about how CMTS operates. This is coming from a consumer standpoint and is a way for me to get knowledge about how they work. Are CMTS a pipe into the internet? Meaning the traffic they get is piped into network switches. Can a CMTS determine the health of a customers modem? Does the CMTS know how many modems are offline when they are not connected? Same goes for those that are connected. How rare is it for a CMTS to crash and go down from hardware issues? Is there redundancy for no vCMTS plants that allow remote routing? And final question, not CMTS related. Are all headends interconnected to one another via fiber if they route you to the data centers?

Has the recent network upgrade made it Mid-Split?

Hi everyone. We recently had our equipment replaced with downtime for over 5 hours. My modem's event log reads the new CMTS MAC is: CMTS-MAC=00:01:5c:xx:xx:xx; CM-QOS=1.1; CM-VER=3.1; By looking up the mac in online tools, I get this: MAC Prefix Brand Name Vendor Name 00:01:5C Cadant Cadant Inc. Does it mean, I can expect mid-split (2gbps/100mbps) in my area soon?

Xfinity says they increased my download speed and that my present equipment (MG-7550) will not give me the new speeds. I am already getting in he mid 500Mbps range and my Tv streaming and everything else works fine. Wondering if it is worth getting a new Modem/Router.
