[Equip] Is buying your own modem worth it if you use phone service?

So this is something that somebody asked me today why don't I buy my own modem. Today i looked at costs and the cheapest thing that can replace the XB7 is the CM2050V. Yes, We use the phone service. No, I can't get rid of it as I'd pay more for the bundle and do actually use it. Right now it's 243 on amazon. With tax around $265. It means at given rental rates it would take 19 months to break even. That's quite a long time. I find I replace them every two years. Not sure about others. My XB6 only a year and a half before I moved to a XB7. Right now given with DOCSIS 4.0, LDD etc. sounds like a bad time to invest in something you might have to replace. You could argue you save $70 however you don't have the insurance that if it's dies you can go get another at any time and have to wait for shipping if a local retailer doesn't have one etc. Of course there is warranty but these things only have a two year warranty anyhow. Opinions?
