1) Location: Chicago, IL
2) The problem: for the last month, my speed is greatly reduced. I had been averaging 10-15 Mbps and now I'm lucky to see 1-2.
3) The problem seemed intermittent (sometimes I would power cycle modem and router and it would disappear or go to bed with the internet slow and wake up and it seemed fine), but in the last week or two, it is more or less continuous
4) Motorola SB6120 and firmware is SB_KOMODO-1.0.6.10-SCM00-NOSH
5) I connect wirelessly to a Linksys E2500 router
6) No firewall currently installed
7) I believe I am on the 25/5 speed tier (I confirmed with a Comcast rep that I should be getting 25 down).
8) Here is a speed test: http://stage.results.speedtest.comcast.net/result/511474404.png
9)Here are Sharper results:
Estimating capacity:
Upstream: 1896 Kbps.
Downstream: 805 Kbps.
The measurement will last for about 2.5 minutes. Please wait.
Checking for traffic shapers:
Upstream: No shaper detected.
Median received rate: 1792 Kbps.
Downstream: No shaper detected.
Median received rate: 784 Kbps.
10) I'm having trouble with the Java on the Tweak Test, but can try to troubleshoot if it seems necessary.
11) I'm running the speed tests from Chrome.
I did some troubleshooting with a couple of Comcast reps. The first told me to power cycle the modem and router (which I had already done) and this did not solve the problem. He then told me to factory reset the modem. I never tried this, but contacted them again when speeds did not improve. A second rep said they would send signals to restart/reprovision the modem and they were "confident' this would solve the problem. It didn't. I contacted them a 3rd time and they had me connect the computer directly to the modem and bypassed the router. I achieved the promised speeds of 25 Mbps or more.
This seems to point to the fact that the router is the problem. I factory restarted the router and upgraded to the latest firmware. There has been no change.
The thing is, I have changed nothing about my set-up from a month ago when things were running well: same computer, same modem, same router, etc. It seems like there must be an explanation for a router that as functioning perfectly well 4 weeks ago to one that is limiting my speed now. Any suggestions? Or is the only logical solution to buy a new router?
