I finally today got Blast activated, which coming from a 1.5MB DSL connection to a 105MB is awesome! So, of course the first thing I did was go to Speedtest.net and run some tests to see what I was actually getting.
First test was wireless on my laptop:
28MB down, 8MB up
Hmmm seems a lot slower than expected, so remembering reading some posts on here about connecting directly to the modem I tried that:
108 down, forget what the upload was.
OK, that's better. So next I figured I would check my HTPC which is hardwired in the living room:
88 down, again I forget what the upload was.
Good enough, so I figured I would also check on my phone using a wireless AC connection:
32MB down, 13MB up.
Is wireless really that much slower? I kind of suspect my set up has something to do with it but wanted to check. The cable modem is in the garage, connected to a Linksys WRT54G, wireless is disabled on this (this I suspect is my bottleneck). Hard-wired to the WRT54G and upstairs is a Netgear R7000 which provides the WiFi to phones, tablets, laptops etc.
First question, are my speeds for hard wired and directly connected to the modem good?
Second question, is that WRT54G causing me to get fairly slow speeds on my wifi? If so I may well ditch it and try to configure the Netgear such that I get a good signal upstairs with it in the garage (it has to be in the garage as all the hard wiring terminates in there).
Thanks.
