My dad lives in a nursing home in Colorado Springs. He has very basic Internet needs; the Economy tier is more than adequate. He has his own Motorola 5101U DOCSIS 2.0 modem.
In the past couple weeks, I've received two robocalls advising me that his modem cannot handle Comcast's fastest speeds and to watch the mail for more information. So far, nothing has come in the mail. He does not want (and could not afford) Comcast's fastest speeds, so I wasn't too concerned.
Then on Friday about 1:30pm, his Internet went down. Talked with the nursing home staff yesterday and had them power cycle the modem and tighten the coax connections. The Online light is off. Then spoke with Comcast tech support who confirmed that the modem is offline and said it is probably because service has been upgraded to 105Mbps in his area. The tech said something about encryption not working with older modems.
Is Comcast pushing out upgrades that kill service to people with DOCSIS 2.0 modems? Or is something else wrong and I should just schedule a service call? My mom is also using a DOCSIS 2.0 modem (D-Link DCM-202) elsewhere in Colorado Springs. So far, it is still working, but I'm concerned that she will be unceremoniously dropped as well.
