[Equip] Purchase replacement for DPC3939 / DPC3939 as just eMTA?

We have the 105/10 service (actual results tend to be 126/12) and a leased DPC3939, that we use for both internet and our phone service. After some initial problems with signal quality it works well enough, but I'd like to switch to a dedicated modem with separate wireless gateway and stop paying the $8 a month rental fee. I confirmed with tech support that in my area (Arlington, VA) they'll let you use your own telephony modem. I've done a bit of reading, but I hope folks can sanity check this for me: 1. If I can find an Arris tm822g, it's the fastest eMTA dedicated modem on the market that Xfinity supports. 2. An Arris tm722g will basically be running at near max speed at 105/10, so it should get me comparable service but I'd need to replace it if I ever increase my service speed. Separately, one of the field techs who came to fix the line said if I wanted to avoid the $8 fee, I could call them and tell them I wanted to use the DPC3939 as just a telephone modem, and have them switch off the wireless gateway, and then hook my own router to it. This would give me internet without the lease fee. That made zero sense to me and I've not seen it described anywhere. Is he anywhere close to right? If yes, has anyone done this? Thanks for any thoughts.
