[Connectivity] Sb6183, IPv4, certain routers & erratic problems

Gday, I have Comcast 250 extreme. I have tried the following routers 1) linksys ea3500 Connection works well albeit limited to about 200mbps NAT due to the cpu on the router. 2) edgerouter lite Erratic packet loss, partial page loads, streaming problems (roku, etc). Capable of gbps NAT but connection Terrible 3) mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+PC Same problem as #2 No IPv6 involved at all. On the 9.2 NOSH firmware on the SB6183. I have noticed it does say Honoring IPv6 provisioning in the sb6183 logs but I have all IPv6 off in the routers. I thought it was an MTU issue so I tried MSS clamping on router #2 and #3 to no avail. Anyone have any idea what's going on? Direct PC connection also works perfectly. Signal levels are fantastic Downstream - all around 0dBm with 39 SNR Upstream - 3 channels from 36 to 38dBm Cheers!

[Equip] New SB6183 = Pleasant surprise

I installed a new SB6183 today. I didn't get the Walled Garden but did have success calling into support. Once it was all set up it's running D30CM-OSPREY-1.5.0.1-GA-01-NOSH and I'm getting slightly better DL and UL speeds. Synced to 8 channels down and 3 up. But the pleasant surprise is that neither my IPV4 nor IPV6 prefix changed. I had expected that the IPV4 would change but having the IPV6 prefix stay the same was very nice. Neither changing? Our cable just went out, modems rebooted and looks like we moved frequency ranges yet again in Indiana, Pa...3yrs ago we were in the 700MHz range... then they moved us to the 600 MHz range... well now looks like they moved us even lower to the upper 500MHz range for DOCSIS, anyone else in a similar range now?

[Equip] Using Actiontec router for Comcast HSI

Hello, and thank you in advance for your help. I have a Actiontec MI424-WR rev. D router from my old fios service I no longer have. Comcast is charging $10 a month for cable modem rental. Is it possible to get internet service (no tv needed) with this Actiontec router with Comcast service? As you can tell, I am trying to not have to rent this router from Comcast.

[Equip] ARRIS/Motorola SB6183 the best modem to go with?

Moving to Comcast area, buying my own modem. I'm looking at the 6183. I will have Blast 75, but want flexibility in the future. I also do not want a modem with built in wifi so I won't have to worry about comcast turning on the hotspot in the modem. Is the 6183 the best bet or should I look at some of the others?

[IPv6] SB6183 IPv6 problems

$

I had a perfectly running IPv6 config on my Zoom 5341J, routed through my Linux server, which looks like this: p3p1 (WAN) is accepting RAs and has a link-local IPv6 address only. bond0 (LAN) is allowing forwarding and is assigned a static IP from the /64 PD obtained on p3p1. DNSmasq is serving DHCPv6 and SLAAC, doing RAs on bond0. With the Zoom, the local Linux server, Windows machines, and mobile devices all passed http://test-ipv6.com perfectly, and quickly. With the only change being the SB6183, here is what I see: -Windows machines work fine and pass the test quickly every time. -The local Linux server and mobile devices sometimes pass and mostly fail, with no consistency. Furthermore, the tests are very slow to run, even if it does pass. When it fails, the errors are all over the place (no IPv6 address, large packet (PDMTU) failure, browser blocking test URLs, no direct IPv6 access, etc.) - I've seen combinations of them all! Anything IPv6 related done directly on the server works, but is very slow or stalls entirely (example - wget on http://download.thinkbroadband.com/1GB.zip, which is IPv6). DNS lookups via Comcast's IPv6 DNS are instant. Almost seems like an MTU issue somewhere along the line that Windows isn't having a problem with, which may also explain these in dmesg (lots of them): [22257.883035] Peer 0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:ffff:0c2f:ae63:49925/80 unexpectedly shrunk window 1023049849:1023051199 (repaired) [22259.075034] Peer 0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:ffff:0c2f:ae63:49925/80 unexpectedly shrunk window 1023049849:1023051199 (repaired) [22275.339033] Peer 0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:ffff:0c2f:ae63:49925/80 unexpectedly shrunk window 1023238849:1023240199 (repaired) I've tried just about everything I can think of and it's leading me to some problem with the 6183 - I've even completely disabled the firewall and all associated rules on the Linux server, and direct access from the server still fails testing. Any thoughts on this?

[Speed] Performance Starter speed increase

With all the big gun tiers getting upgraded this month, Comcast also quietly increased the speed of Performance Starter tier from 6/1 to 10/2. The website reflects the new speed and I just reset my modem, testing consistently 11.4 / 2.4 (standard 25% over-provision) in Houston, TX. Looks like the Economy and Economy Plus did not change.

I have have been getting only about 50 down instead of the 105 that I subscribe to. Checked the signals and they were in spec. I have a Cisco DPC3941T, wondering if it's the modem. Probably call later today but wanted to see if there is anything I can do besides resetting it which don't help.

[Equip] I'm a Comcast newbie - Question(s)

Hi.....I am going to be getting blast on the 105 down plan where I will be moving in the middle of October. I'm going to have a few questions, and I can think of one now. I'm planning to bundle my Xfinity blast with TV. In doing so, I want to purchase my own Modem, the SB6183, and attach my own router, the Linksys WRT1900AC. Does the fact that I'm also going to be getting TV service affect how I want to configure this? Excuse me if this is a strange question, but I've had Dish for many years for TV, and I'm not too familiar with the way that one coaxial puts through both the TV and Internet signals. Thanks. -- I occasionally hung out with the boys at 5150 back in the day.

FYI, first time poster, this post is forwarded from my lawyer (and edited somewhat by me). I'm actually a regular, but didn't want to take the chance of Comcast figuring out who I am and causing me grief. If you've been affected, please participate. If you meet all of the conditions below and are willing to participate in a possible class action lawsuit, please reply...anonymously or via private message. Your information will be kept confidential, however please do not provide account information (only your first/last name and state of residence) as the response may not come directly to our office. If we decide to contact you, we will ask you for a mailing address and you will received a certified letter from our office in the mail. Please note that action is not guaranteed and not everyone will be selected. Anyone affiliated with Comcast must opt out and not reply at all. The conditions are as follows: 1) You are being capped by Comcast at Comcast's standard 300 GB cap. 2) You are under contract with Comcast for HSI (Comcast High Speed Internet, also known as Xfinity high speed internet) or HSI/TV and have signed up with the understanding that you were allowed to go over your cap up to 3 times per year. Note that this doesn't mean it was in the 2 year agreement, but you could have also heard it via the press. 3) Despite earlier warnings of having 3 'strikes', and, with no written notification, you were subsequently charged the following month (or will be charged; many will be charged this month). 4) We have a small number of people who have encountered this. We are willing to represent them in individual suits, but we'd like to see if this is worth going for class action. We (I and my legal team) are not affiliated with Comcast. However this is not a guarantee to represent you in court. Furthermore, our (their, since I'm posting on their behalf) law offices, while expansive, do not represent clients in every state and therefore, are not providing legal advice. I personally make no guarantees of any kind obviously. Can't be liable for that. Finally, I will add, they are also investigating caps, monopolies, etc. The stuff listed earlier was the 'easy' stuff. Other issues will be brought up as federal and various state laws are researched. FYI we (the office I'm working with as well as myself) reside in Nashville, TN, but they have law offices in many states. Regardless of what you decide to do, I encourage you to contact a lawyer. Finally mods, apologies if this is against the rules, if so please delete it. Just trying to get the word out.

[Connectivity] New Cisco DPC3941 Gateway Horrible Performance

$

When Comcast sent me this new gateway, did I just luck out and get a dog device? History.. Have the Blast! service with the Triple Play. Everything was trucking along fine while using the Arris 722g EMTA.. Internet @ 120mbps, no lag or latency of note.. Telco worked fine, crystal clear & no issues. THEN.. I start getting daily calls from Comcast all but demanding I accept a new gateway device - that the DOCSIS 3.0 device I was using is now obsolete and will stop working - because I guess of the Blast! speed increase to 150mbps. Whatever, so I finally relent and let them send the new gateway. When I got it and saw that it was a Cisco made device I was cool with it, because of my familiarity with Cisco devices on the enterprise level I figured this box should be good. BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZT BOY WAS I WRONG. First of all.. Telco sound quality is horrible. It sounds like an old POTS line with squirrel chew and water in the line. Static static static.. sometimes very quiet most of the time loud as hell. Incoming calls have been unreliable at best - sometimes a caller will get through but at least half the time they say it goes right to voice mail. Oh when this happens, when the caller does not hear a ring and the call goes to voicemail - on my end the phone will ring and ring and ring until the caller finishes leaving the message. Pick up the line it is dead, hang up it starts ringing again. Oh and it's hit or miss if the voicemail that's left is even saved. Internet.. it seems the only thing reliable with that is going to the Xfinity and speedtest.net speed test sites. I can go all day and get 150-190mbps download speeds - but the second I try to go to a regular website.. facebook, cnn, dslreports, it doesn't matter - I get the "waiting for xxx.xxx.com..." Sometimes it will time out sometimes the pages will load - slowly. Go back after to a speed test site and all is fine.. sub 20ms ping and super high transfer speeds. Streaming video? I do not know what that is anymore.. Ask me about buffering video, I have plenty of that. In fact it buffers so much I wonder if I have a Janitorial service instead of an Internet service.. If I want to watch a youtube video or any other video I have to download the damn thing in order to watch it uninterrupted. All Comcast support can do is suggest a reboot and or send a refresh signal to the modem. Don't even get me started on support. If Comcast wants to have people read from and strictly follow their script, at least hire people who can understand and speak in clear English. Oh and please do something about your scripted lines - after 5 minutes speaking with "technical support" I feel as if my IQ dropped 20-30 points. Anyway... I have replaced the cable connecting to the phone block, even replaced the ethernet cables - twice. Replaced the two way splitter several times as well and I even relocated the modem to where the drop off the splitter is now less than 3' long, along with the new drop new compression fittings were put on all the video drops.. I even redid the bonding and while I was at it I ran a new power drop so the modem is all by itself on it's own circuit. Verified no ground loop and zero voltage on any of the lines. Basically I re-worked or replaced everything I could past the demarc. I have two computers which are connected directly to the gateway via ethernet - the gateway is setup to be the router / firewall. Also have one laptop and several tablets that access via wireless. All see the same shitty network performance - except for the speed tests, again those work perfect- the only two sites that do seem to work. Prior to all of this, with the original EMTA, my network performance was fine. Setup was simple.. EMTA into an Asus Router then to all my computers. Speeds were fine, performance was near flawless. New setup, EMTA/Gateway to all my computers, performance on Internet and telco is absolutely horrible. Signal levels are fine.. [att=1] [att=2] [att=3] The logs show nothing of note. The only thing hinkey I see are with the Codewords.. across all 16 channels the numbers are all exactly the same.. the same # of unerrored codewords, the exact same # of correctable codewords and the exact same # of uncorrectable codewords.. that all 16 channels being exactly the same seems real odd to me. Since support doesn't seem to be willing to send anybody out, can I just go to the office to pick up a different gateway to swap out - or do I need a service call to do that? Any suggestions? As of right now, I am at the point where I am willing to take the speed hit or downgrade my Internet package just so I could go back to the old EMTA that worked. The only thing I did not try was putting the gateway into Bridge mode and going back to the old router - I didn't do that because from what I read on Comcast's and other message boards that option is pretty much a useless one. Anyone here have problems bridging these new gateways?

[Equip] Using Cisco DPC3941 in Bridge Mode..

So what's the trick to get this device to work in bridge mode and allow a 3rd party router to get an IP and act as the router/gateway? I tried four different routers : Asus RT-65U, Netgear WNDR4300, Linksys EA6200, and Netgear WNR3500 (SamKnows). While all would show active connections via the ethernet lights, none would actually get an IP from Comcast - all ended up with 0.0.0.0 and subsequently no Internet connection. I have been able to get a working IP if I direct connect a PC to the gateway while in bridge mode. Did this with three different PCs. It's just the routers don't seem to work. Yes.. I did a complete power cycle of the gateway each time I connected a new device. Yes.. I was using only port #1 to make the connection when in bridge mode. Yes.. I even tried cloning the MAC address to match one of the PC's that was pulling an IP. That failed to work also. Not sure what else to do. There has to be a solution other than driving back and forth to the retail center (that now moved much farther away than where it was) and hoping the replacement works. I don't see how on a brand-new device everything would work except for one "feature".. Do I need to call into support to have them do something on their end to make this work? If so, is there a number I can call that will not get me one of their overseas call centers with people who can barely speak English and will not deviate one bit from the script that they read? It's really frustrating waiting for the rep to end their 2-3 minute spiel each time when a simple "yes" or "no" or "let me check" would have sufficed.

[Speed] Side Discussion About Gigabit Deployments

Anyone know if Comcast has actually started installs? I live in the west palm beach, fl market announced for deployment this month. So far phone agents don't know anything of the service. I've been told by different agents, 2016, June and it'll be in the system tomorrow. None had even heard of the service before I inquired and they did a bit of research, so I went to out local sales office to inquire in person. There I had to show them the press release, to which they simply said its not yet available in the market. Seems like this was a pure fiber to the press release hail marry announcement to try to salvage the dead merger. I have blast and a $12 fee for a speed increase it used to be $10, i get around 152Mbps on speed test. When comcast upgraded the speeds wasn't the standard blast upgraded to 150? If so then why am i getting charged a $12 fee for a speed increase? 150Mbps is the max speed in my local town. My bill does not show how much i pay for internet since it's in a promotion.

Is a Smart TV appropriate for Senior Newbies ?

I recenty bought a Samsung 32" Smart TV with a built-in browser for my friend on his 82nd birthday, and provided him with high speed wifi access. My intent was to introduce him to the Internet, in a way that would not be too daunting for him. I loaded the TV with all of my cord-cutting credentials (netflix, prime, hulu), and so far he is loving it. My intent was to encourage him to get online, for the first time in his life. Question: Is the built-in browser mature enough for seniors with no prior internet experience? (He has refused a PC/MAC, and I thought this could be a sensible approach) Any thoughts are welcome. -nony
