Hello Experts:
I've been having intermittent very slow (>.5mbps) upload speeds with always normal download speeds recently, which is causing the internet (esp. my work VPN) to be very slow. It seems to randomly fix itself sometimes and after calls with Comcast but today it seems to be getting worse. Comcast is sending a tech out this weekend to check. I wanted to see if anyone here had an idea of what is going on and if it might be something on my end (like my modem). Thanks for your help! Hope there's enough info here to diagnose.
Here are the details:
1) Your location: City and State.
San Francisco Bay Area (I live just south of San Francisco)
2) A description of the problem.
Recently, upload speeds have gone down to 0.1-0.3mbps. This has really caused issues with my work VPN, among other things. Download speeds are good and same as before.
3) Is the issue intermittent, constant or does it occur at a specific time of day?
It does seem sporadic. Today I called Comcast and they did some "upgrade" which fixed it but within about two hours it is slow again. Hardwired to modem. Tried resetting and restarting modem via Comcast's help and by the modem config interface (after disconnecting the coax cable the reset button shows up), using different laptops, etc. No difference.
4) Your modem make, model & firmware version.
Arris/Moto Surboard SB6121. Cannot find firmware version on configuration webpages.
5) Describe any home networking if applicable. (i.e. routers, hubs, adapters, etc.)
Using an Asus RT-N56U router.
6) List any firewall and/or anti-virus software you have installed. Include what version you have.
Avira, latest version. It's slow when testing on my Galaxy S7 as well.
7) What HSI Tier you are subscribed to: (i.e. 6/1, 25/5, 50/10, 105/10, 150/10, etc.)
Subbed to 25/5 (I think its called Performance)
8) Post a Speed Test
Using Comcast's tool, tested around 4pm Pacific Time:
IPv4
Ping (ms)
14
Download (Mbps)
30.4
Peak: 30.97
Upload (Mbps)
0.30
Peak: 0.62
Server location: Sacramento, CA
About 5 minutes later I got:
25ms
30.0 down
6.0 up
About 10 mins later and I got:
30ms
30.4 down
0.78 up
Another 10 mins later and got:
29ms
30.5 down
0.59 up
9) Post what browser/browsers you are using while running a speed test.
Google Chrome. Tried with MS Edge and same result
10) What indicator lights does the modem have and the current status of each. (i.e. constant or blinking)
All lights are normal operation. So all solid except Ethernet which is blinking. Power, Internet are green. Uplink, Downlink, Ethernet are blue.
11) Post the modem's Signal Levels & Log Entries
Comcast support indicated that 16 dBmV is acceptable for downstream power level. Here are the details:
Downstream Bonding Channel Value
Channel ID 9 10 14 16

12) Give a description of the cable & splitters configuration in your home leading to the modem.
I haven't installed any splitters. The cable line comes out underneath the carpeting in my apartment in a corner of the room and I'm not certain where it leads to (looks to be set up by a previous tech as the cables connectors look the same as the ones Comcast provided me before). Speeds have been fine in the past so I'm not sure that this is an issue.
13) Packet Loss tests:
Tracert to google works fine. Pinging google.com occasionally results in a timed out request.
I'm getting packet loss when using the DSL reports line quality tool:

[Speed] Side Discussion on New speed tiers in 2016
I noticed this page while looking at the bill.
Beginning from March 16th, Performance Pro and Blast! Pro are available for speeds up to 100 Mbps and 200 Mbps respectively.
I currently have Blast! (150/10) plan with Comcast and seems like this service won't be available for new subscriptions but replaced with Blast! Pro etc.
I'm in Sacramento, California region. Did anyone else receive similar notice on their bill?
Could this also mean free speed upgrades as well?

[Speed] Have 200mbps service. Getting 120mbps
Okay, I've tried everything I can think of but I don't know whats going on. Before I start, this only applies to one device (my Asus S400ca).
I have it hooked up to a gigabit ethernet and have tried both of my routers (T-Mobile Cellspot/Netgear R7000) and still performance is noticeably below our provisioned speed. Whats weird however is all of my other devices (even over wifi) perform better.
Any ideas? So far I've rebooted the computer multiple times, updated the drivers, disabled my VPN, firewall, and switched DNS servers. Interestingly enough, this problem started around a week ago..

[WiFi] Xfinity Wifi Hotspots
Can anyone please enlighten me as to if these are "safe" for general browsing on the Android platform? I'm not real savvy in this area and T-Mobile is rather weak in some parts of NW Houston so this would come in handy if the Hotspot is not a threat. I'm familiar with basic PC stuff but this isn't one of them. Do I need a VPN & if so, which one?
Thanks

[Equip] The "Approved Devices List" page has now been totally remodeled
FYI - Comcast has totally revised their page that provided a list of currently approved DOCSIS devices, that's located at https://mydeviceinfo.xfinity.com/
However, the "My New Modem" page, listing the currently recommended DOCSIS devices available for retail sale, is still at http://mynewmodem.comcast.net/ (for now).

Comcast..., UGH!
I recently 'upgraded' from slow 12/1 Mbps DSL to 100/5 MBps with Comcast.
But after about 2 weeks, I have decided to go back to the much slower 12/1 Mbps DSL.
Why? I was getting way too many errors (both correctable and uncorrectable) with Comcast. And it was causing problems with my online gaming. For example, in less than 2 days there were 6 downstream channels (16 channels total) with over 500,000 uncorrectable errors (and like 5,000,000 total).
I called Comcast, and they sent a service tech out to check the lines. But all he did was get on my computer and check that it could get online, and run a speed test. Then he announce that there were no problems. When I logged into the modem and showed him the errors, he just said the power levels and the signal to noise levels were all good, so the lines were good. He dismissed the errors as some tech error not related to the lines, line connectors, or splitters.
In the end he said the line are good and he refused to even look at them (which is what he was sent out to do).
Not sure where Comcast gets there service techs from, but this guy was lazy, rude, very annoying, and just plain stupid. And with a 30 day guarantee and only another week until the first bill payment was due, I decide to just drop the service before having to pay the bill.
So, for now, I am stuck with slow DSL until Google Fiber gets installed. (Which strangely they have already wired the building for Google Fiber, and I have had a Google Fiber jack for months. But they will not actually run the fiber in the area for maybe another year.)

[Equip] Retail Arris TM822G(eMTA) Now Available on Amazon(edit: pending)
Not sure if this has been posted already, but figured I would mention it for those who weren't aware.
EDIT: It appears that this was put up prematurely by Amazon based on later posts.
It seems that the retail Arris TM822G Comcast 'kit' is now available on Amazon for the price of $149.99 compared to the gateway(TG862) version for $199.99 .
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01KVOKVYY/
It seems like it became available on the 9th or so.
The box includes -
- TM822G
- One short and one long coax cable
- Ethernet cable
- Power cord
- 2 way splitter
You don't seem to get the battery included.
There is currently only one TM822G listed on the approved list at the moment(A.K.A. no 'retail' version listed), so it may cause some problems. Edit: See page 3, it is now approved for retail purchase.
It doesn't seem like there are any other higher spec retail eMTA devices at the moment sold by Amazon for Comcast, sadly(unless I missed it).
In other news, there is also a new 32x8 AC1750(no voice) Arris SBG7580AC gateway available as well for $229.99 . It is currently pending approval on Comcast.

[Equip] FWIW-The Arris TG3482(XB6) Just Went Through FCC Testing
For whoever is interested, the TG3482 has just gone through FCC testing. This is Comcast's XB6 wireless gateway. As I mentioned in the past, this gateway limited Ethernet ports. The TG3482 has two Ethernet, two RJ-11 phone ports, and the obvious coax connector. It's DOCSIS 3.1 gateway, as many of you might already have known. It also includes a 8x8 wireless AC 5 GHz radio, paired with a 2x2 wireless N 2.4 GHz radio(kind of lopsided lol).
FCC testing mentions it has ZigBee as well as Bluetooth.
Maybe I'm missing something, but the testing doesn't mention 8x8 on the 5 GHz radio being tested though. It only seems to say that 6x8 was tested.
https://apps.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/ViewExhibitReport.cfm?mode=Exhibits&RequestTimeout=500&calledFromFrame=N&application_id=XgvXTjBAEjMi3e0MnfBU1Q%3D%3D&fcc_id=UIDTG3482ER

[Connectivity] Inconsistent Comcast Internet Speeds (200/10 Plan)
Hello guys. I was wondering what a couple things on your Comcast internet looks like. Please let me know if I'm just being paranoid.
ALL TESTS WERE RUN WITH AN ETHERNET CABLE CONNECTED TO THE COMPUTER.
---
My internet just seems inconsistent from the tests outlined below. It even gets to the point where my ping will spike to 250-300ms in CS:GO for minutes; although, sometimes it is only seconds. I am positive this is not a problem with CS:GO because when it happens I make sure I ping Google.com and the latency is usually always around 200ms constant.
This DOES NOT happen a lot but it still happens where it's a big enough of an issue to bring up. I also sometimes get YouTube buffering which is very annoying. But I believe this just might happen once in a while because of how big YouTube is. I am paying a high amount for 200/10 and I expect rock solid connection. There is a lot of information I'm about to give you and it'll overwhelm your mind so please take your time and read it thoroughly.
Thanks.
---
One thing I noticed today(wasn't like this on 3/2/17) was that my upstream power levels have changed from 37.75 dBmV, and 2x 35.75 dBmv TO 43.50dBmv, 41.75 dBmv, and 42.75 dBmv. Looks like a technician came out for someone else in the neighborhood and noticed a problem in my line? No clue. If so, good work.
Before I go straight over to the guys at Comcast_Xfinity I rather get your guys advice since I may just be paranoid. I was also thinking of not posting over there until DOCSIS 3.1 modems are in full effect since maybe that would solve my problem? Or do you only get DOCSIS 3.1 modems with Gigabit internet? (It sounds non-sense to wait, lol)

Various SpeedTests from today and last night: http://imgur.com/a/z939d
Note On DSLReports: The bufferbloat seemed to be around +20-30ms during the download with an occasional spike to +230ms. Upload speed bufferbloat seemed to be much more consistent.
(I also got a message that my proxy or firewall does not support byte-range requests BUT that was solved by turning off the HTTPS Everywhere Extension. I was sometimes getting kilobyte upload speeds with the extension on.)

** One thing I've noticed is that my results are VERY inconsistent pinging Google or other websites. Just look at http://i.imgur.com/ETZYa6k.png's result.. It's ridiculous. In my eyes it's clear that something is wrong in that picture but maybe I am just being paranoid. I've also ran this test on a Comcast business line with well over 200+ devices on the Wi-Fi, ethernet cords, patch panels, switches, all that jazz and I did not see issues like this.
** I feel like high latency is why I am experiencing these problems? I don't know but it's getting annoying running all these tests. Sometimes it's pinging 25ms, sometimes it's ping 45ms, sometimes it's pinging 60ms, sometimes it's pinging 200ms.. like I don't know. It just doesn't seem normal to me. Pinging Reddit seems to have more normal-like levels but still some spikes.

Some important things to note:
1. YouTube videos do not always buffer. Most of the time they play fine but it does happen from time to time and for that reason I mentioned it.
2. My Windows Firewall is off and testing with the network firewall fully off made no difference; therefore, I turned it back on to the settings listed above. However, the ping is much more consistent at this time because it was 4:00 in the morning and most people in the neighborhood probably aren't using the internet. (Or would this not even matter?) I am still seeing spikes to 120+ms while pinging Google and random spikes from 20-60ms.

Here is a traceroute to a CS:GO server when I experienced ping spikes TONIGHT, but it seemed to have stopped after 30 minutes. It was VERY frustrating! You cannot play video games with ping spikes and especially first-person shooters.
http://pastebin.com/v93bb3fy
---
So basically, my main concern is the weird pings in command prompt, sometimes getting ping spikes in CS:GO, and low SpeedTest results on Google. Maybe I am just paranoid and these are the limitations of cable.
Thank you for reading and hopefully you “experts” see something concerning.

How to change ip?
So i know you cant change the ip on the wireless gateway that i have now i think you cant?, But i do have 2 routers. If i put the gateway in bridge mode and hook it up to the router will that let me do it?
And is there any good aftermarket all in one units with phone port that also will let me do it when i buy one in the future?
if you want to know why i want this feature is because im going to start streaming and you know how that goes when it does happen lol.. just want to be prepared. i also really don't trust the one i have now.

[Install] new customer Xfinity X1 - box & hardware on outside of house?
getting Xfinity X1 triple play with phone service and battery backup.
postponed my install today so i can manage the cabling mostly on the outside of my house.
I had done new siding on house and have everything nice & neat and I don't want a new box installed anywhere with new holes drilled to run cable any which way - I already have LB conduit boxes and nonmetallic flexible conduit there for the existing HPNA service and all its related cables. On the outside of the house you don't see any cables it's all within 1/2" flex conduit which is about 16" long - runs from HPNA box to gray plastic 1/2" LB conduit box that is the hole through the house. These gray conduit box and conduit are available from home depot, lowes, etc. I think it's Carlon brand, or was when I got it.
A) My questing is does there need to be a box on the outside of the house for Xfinity X1, similar to what I have now with my existing HPNA setup? I ask because my mom's house has comcast with phone service and the RG-6 from the pole comes into house, does a 3-way split to the rooms and that's it, no box on outside of house. Her bill shows "HD Preferred Pls XF", so i guess that's not X1 which is completely different?
B) The installer this morning I thought showed me the box he was going to install on outside of house, it was Arris. If a box does need to go on outside of house, can someone let me know the make/model of what it might be? I want to look up dimensions to this, I want to upsize my existing 1/2" conduit since that size is only really good for 2 cables thru it at most. I want to make sure whatever flex conduit size I up-size to is either not too small or too large to connect to this Xfinity outside box.
C) My understanding is once I have the one RG-6 coax coming in to the house (whether there is a box on outside of house or not) that this will then have a 3-way split: one going to my living room tv, one going to bedroom tv, and one to my office room where the "modem" is which then provides internet/wifi, and the phone jack that all phones connect in to. Is this correct? And for battery backup will that be located next to modem in my office as well? Or does that power the hardware in the box on outside of house {which is how my existing HPNA setup is} ?

[Equip] CM1000 vs SB8200
Since AFAIK these are the only 2 commercially available (and I use that term loosely) D3.1 modems I was thinking a comparison might be in order, and to avoid it getting buried in the D3.1 modems thread I figure it should have it's own thread.
So from what I know
SB8200 Pro's
2 Ethernet ports (though without any real defined use.)
CM1000 Pro's
Lower cost
Please add to this.
Also does anyone have the powersupply specs of the SB8200? I know the CM1000's Power supply specs are 12v1a. (which for me that's nice as I have a high quality regulated 12v powersupply that I'd be able to use.)

2. Packet Loss averaging 1-6%, with peaks as high as 50% (Just now: http://www.pingtest.net/result/159681884.png Earlier today: http://www.pingtest.net/result/159681434.png http://www.pingtest.net/result/159678192.png)
3. Problem is consistent in that it's persistent, but usually in the 1-5% range, rarely very high.
4. Problem started on Motorola SB6141, upgraded to Arris SB6183 when told the SB6141 was EOL, no improvement. Software version: D30CM-OSPREY-1.5.2.3-GA-01-NOSH
5. Testbed is on wired connection to router(which has been replaced after problems started). PC->Router->Modem, problems occur on both wired and wireless connections.
Ran several pathpings, available here: http://pastebin.com/SBmCvpvg
I had a tech come out earlier today, and he check the signal and said the signal looked fine, changed out wires and removed some extra splitters from the oustide box. Checking signals, the work left the downstream power about the same, and upstream power went from low 30s to low 40s. According to the tech, sending another tech out would be useless, and him raising a ticket to his supervisor or maintenance would go nowhere and be instantly closed since the signal levels from the street are fine.
Speeds are great, testing in the 80-90Mbps range, but trying to do anything p2p or gaming has become a nightmare. The rest of the household hasn't noticed, since video streams are doing fine.
So far I've replaced the router, modem, and had a tech visit, so I'm pretty much at a dead end for things I can do to try and fix the issue.

What else can I do from here? Who can I contact, or what can I try to fix?

[WiFi] Xfinity Wifi Hotspots
Can anyone please enlighten me as to if these are "safe" for general browsing on the Android platform? I'm not real savvy in this area and T-Mobile is rather weak in some parts of NW Houston so this would come in handy if the Hotspot is not a threat. I'm familiar with basic PC stuff but this isn't one of them. Do I need a VPN & if so, which one?
Thanks
