I've started the process of finding out if Gigabit Pro is "truly" available at my home. Comcast called me back today and verified it looks like my home is able to connect to one of three nodes but they need to do an on-site survey to verify for sure.
I'm kinda stuck on the price. I was hoping they'd have a promotion in my area like some have been able to get; or even at a minimum drop the construction or installation fee or reduce it, but the agent I talked to said there were no promotions in my area. I asked if anyone else in my neighborhood had the service and he said no one else he could see has it.
I currently have their fastest cable tier, Extreme 250. I'm definitely a power user (software developer, computer nerd) and can see the appeal of this product. I'm trying to convince myself if this is something I really need or if I just want it for the coolness factor / bragging rights.
Does anyone who has had it installed regret getting it?
Thanks!

[Equip] Are tModems w/ user firmware restore?
A little over 2 years ago, our self-owned Zoom 5341 was so crippled by a bad firmware push that it couldn't even go online to try again on the firmware. Comcast refused to take responsibility because it was self-owned. Zoom said they couldn't help, because they hadn't built in any provision for a user firmware restore.
We've been thinking of trying another self-owned modem, but don't want to get burned again by the same situation. Are there any obtainable cable modems (even some obscure brand) Which allow the use to archive and restore firmware? A modem-only modem would be preferred.

[Account] comcast greeting - is this new
It had been a couple of years since I opened a comcast page, but a friend was having problems, so I opened xfinity.com/support/. I did not sign in, and was surprised to be greeted with "Hi, Charles". How long have they been doing this? Are they looking us up using IP, MacID, or? Yeah, I know we, our browsing and usage is all tracked, but this sure rubs your nose in it.
If this is already being discussed in another thread, could you please point me to it.

[Equip] Retail Arris TM822G(eMTA) Now Available on Amazon/From Arris
Edit: It is now available once again, based on recent posts.
Not sure if this has been posted already, but figured I would mention it for those who weren't aware.
It seems that the retail Arris TM822G Comcast 'kit' is now available on Amazon for the price of $149.99 compared to the gateway(TG862) version for $199.99 .
https://www.amazon.com/SURFboard-TM822R-2-Voice-Xfinity-Packaging/dp/B06XD6VQ1J
It seems like it became available on the 9th or so.
The box includes -
- TM822G
- One short and one long coax cable
- Ethernet cable
- Power cord
- 2 way splitter
You don't seem to get the battery included.
There is currently only one TM822G listed on the approved list at the moment(A.K.A. no 'retail' version listed), so it may cause some problems. Edit: See page 3, it is now approved for retail purchase.
It doesn't seem like there are any other higher spec retail eMTA devices at the moment sold by Amazon for Comcast, sadly(unless I missed it).
In other news, there is also a new 32x8 AC1750(no voice) Arris SBG7580AC gateway available as well for $229.99 . It is currently pending approval on Comcast.

[Plan] Side Discussion on DOCSIS 3.1 Gigabit service
Mod Note: This topic started as "XI Gigabit DOCSIS 3.1 - data cap with 3-year agreement?" It has become a general discussion of this deployment, hence the title change. uid://455626
If you actually have had this service installed, the stickied report topic is here. > https://www.dslreports.com/forum/r30960001-Speed-Report-DOCSIS-3-1-Gigabit-Service-Here If you report, please include info requested in the first post and keep that topic strictly on topic. Thanks, sortofageek
The XI Gigabit DOCSIS 3.1 is now available in my area. I am tempted to sign up. Early reports said unlimited data with a 3-year agreement. The Comcast website says nothing but the typical disclaimer about the data usage plan. I don't want to sign a 3-year agreement for a plan with a data cap. Does anyone know if the XI Gigabit service is subject to the data usage nonsense?

[WiFi] The Secret of the Hidden SSID Revealed
(Update for TG1682G 6/25/16, see: https://www.dslreports.com/forum/r30835010- )
I had some time today to mess around with friend's Comcast gateway today and I think I've made a lot of progress!! This is for those who don't want to contact support to have their hidden SSID turned off after bridging or for those who use the gateway as their main network and want to remove the SSID.
I was looking at the page(using F12) and I saw a network in there labeled as a public Wi-Fi hotspot. It was listed as ".hide" and it came with the SSID of "XHS-(last 8 digits of CM mac)."
There was also a reference to something along the lines of a "home security ssid" being listed as SSID 3 or something like that. I can't remember exactly. Could it stand for Xfinity Home Security? Who knows! I heard a few other options for it too :). Even if it was for xfinity home security(as some people rumored it to be for a while), it seems like they ignored that path.
So, I decided to have a little fun with it. I typed in the SSID I saw hidden in the page(with a random password) and tada, the hidden SSID showed itself. I still didn't know the password which kept me a little curious still.
Then I thought, what if I just have some fun with the URL? I clicked on the wireless settings for the 2.4 GHz radio and was given the link http://10.0.0.1/wireless_network_configuration_edit.php?id=1 .
I saw the 5 GHz radio was id=2, so I plugged id=3 at the end. That's when I was given a "Public Wi-Fi Network Configuration (2.4 GHz)" page. There it provided me the option to enable or disable it. I tried finding "xfinitywifi" but it didn't work :(.
As a little extra thing, I also discovered there were a lot of MoCA settings hidden away. If you go into F12 and get rid of everything with "display:none" you are presented a much larger array of settings. I never checked to see if the settings stuck or not. Let me know if they do.
I wish I had more time with the gateway to see what else I could find.
Disable this before it's locked out from access :). Go go go!
Note: This was done with a dual band gateway. If someone has a single band, let me know how it goes with the URL changing.

[Install] New Built House
A family member is having a house built in a community with underground utilities that will be served by Comcast. This home is in a development and the utilities are preinstalled along the curb by the developer with a pedestal/tap serving a pair of homes. The garages on the homes homes are Left/Right with pairs of houses having adjacent driveways. The builder has prewired coax to the garage side of the house along with the electric and gas meter.
Typically my experience is that the tap/pedestal is between the houses/driveways so it is a short direct shot to the side of the garages.
However . for what ever reason, the tap pedestals for all the utilities are on the other side of the driveways, like they were off by one lot what this was developed putting the pedestals on the wrong side of the driveway.
For the builder, this is no big deal; since the driveway was not done, he simply trenched under the drive and put in gas and electric lines.
For us, it may be an issue as the driveway will be paved before taking over the house. Dropping a conduit is not an option. This means that during the digin after install, Comcast will either have to cross under the paved driveway or loop around the back of the house, an extra 120' or so. And there are sprinklers in the lawn fed from the house.
So, Will Comcast loop around the house to miss the driveway or will they cross under the driveway somehow?
What liability do they have for damaging sprinkler lines?

I went ahead and did a factory restore on my modem last Friday but was running into some issues with the activation page. As I was on the phone with comcast the rep told me to restart the computer and when I booted up google chrome I was given a Your connection is not private. I restarted again and it worked fine after, I'm curious to know as to why this happened? I put a generic picture of what the notification looked like.

[Price] Go to CenturyLink or try to haggle with Comcast?
I'm out of contract - currently paying $74.95 for "Internet Plus" (which is Blast 75+a handful of TV crap I don't even have hooked up/use) and $50 for unlimited data - bringing my monthly bill to $124.95 before fees or $136.38 after fees.
I'd like to try to reduce my bill without losing unlimited data. I have no issues continuing to pay what I am paying but like to scope out my options to make sure I'm getting a good deal. I can drop to a lower speed tier if the cost savings are worth it.
The way I see it is as follows:
- Swap current plan to Performance 25 for $64.95 (website pricing when I log in), which isn't worth the $10 of savings IMO. I'd still have to carry the unlimited giving a net gain of $10/mo savings.
- Swap to Comcast Business (25/10) for $99.95 with that brutal monthly pro-rated ETF. Saves $25/mo.
- Swap to CenturyLink Business (20/2) for $74.99 with a $200 ETF. Saves $49.96/mo.
- CenturyLink residential has no unlimited data option so not considered.
I have no idea what CenturyLink is like in my area. I've never had issues with Comcast which is why I've stuck it out and paid the higher rate. Any chance I can haggle a cheaper overall residential rate with Comcast, or should I jump ship to CenturyLink? The Comcast Business option isn't very attractive IMO due to the super high ETF and the fact that the CenturyLink option is 5Mbit less downstream and would save me more money overall.
Thoughts?

No more separate EMTA and owned modems?
I have 7 employees with Comcast connections. All have a comcast supplied EMTA and a separate surfboard 6141 modem for data. Today one of my employees lost connection the internet. After calling Comcast, I am being told this is no longer supported. I can't use the EMTA for a modem because no matter what, they drop out of bridge modem for no dang reason and I have to rush to their house to re-do it. The router I supply does a site to site VPN so getting rid of that is not an option. This has worked for the longest time. Any ideas?

[IPv6] Comcast Business HSI, SMCD3G CM & IPv6?
Hi,
I've Comcast Business HSI, a shiny new SMCD3G and an IPv6 delegation.
The cablemodem (CM) is set for the IPv4 public IP allocation to be presented to my own border router, an Ubiquiti ERLite. All of that is working perfectly, just as it did with my SMC8014.
There seems to be a question as to whether I'll be able to get IPv6 working with this CM. See Summary of Comcast's support of IPv6 on their CPE for their copper cable network
So, before I embark on a futile exercise: Is IPv6 still wonky on the SMCD3G on Comcast Business HSI, or not?
Thanks,
Jim

Arris SB8200 Activation Issues (Cisco CMTS)
I just got my new Arris SB8200 from Amazon yesterday. I am having a problem where it just keeps cycling through the downstream, upstream and internet LED indicator lights. I called Comcast twice they both said they don't even see the cable modem connecting to the system. Both times they insisted there was something wrong with the CM and to return it. So I'm doing that just to prove them wrong. I tried a number of things including not plugging in the Ethernet and power cycling the modem manually many times and let it sit for about a hour and a half cycling through. The modem is supported in our area on the Comcast device support page.
I was told in this thread (I am the Anonymous user) (http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r31304106-~time=1489503828?r=151#31304106) that it may be a problem with Cisco CMTS units (much like the Netgear D3.1 CM issues with the CM1000's). I Verified and the CMTS Mac address is indeed Cisco owned. Though I'm not sure what model I am on. There was a mention that someone named "netcool" on these forums has a fix (http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r31303566- & http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r31303256-) (I'll try PMing netcool also). Is there anyway that can be applied in our area also? Or is there a way I can call Comcast and not get level 1 support that can fix this issue?

850 feet away from cable?
My husband and I bought a house, listing said it was cable ready and even Comcast confirmed this when I inquired about transferring service prior to closing.
We called to get service set up and a tech came out and told us we have no service.
Fast forward 3 months and I was told by Comcast business that it will cost $50,000 in construction costs to go 850 feet or $55/foot. This seems insanely high to me.
What other options do I have?
Century link is "full" and satellite won't work for me because I need to VPN for work.
Thank you in advance!

[Equip] CM1000 vs SB8200
Since AFAIK these are the only 2 commercially available (and I use that term loosely) D3.1 modems I was thinking a comparison might be in order, and to avoid it getting buried in the D3.1 modems thread I figure it should have it's own thread.
So from what I know
SB8200 Pro's
2 Ethernet ports (though without any real defined use.)
CM1000 Pro's
Lower cost
Please add to this.
Also does anyone have the powersupply specs of the SB8200? I know the CM1000's Power supply specs are 12v1a. (which for me that's nice as I have a high quality regulated 12v powersupply that I'd be able to use.)

[WiFi] Xfinity Wifi Hotspots
Can anyone please enlighten me as to if these are "safe" for general browsing on the Android platform? I'm not real savvy in this area and T-Mobile is rather weak in some parts of NW Houston so this would come in handy if the Hotspot is not a threat. I'm familiar with basic PC stuff but this isn't one of them. Do I need a VPN & if so, which one?
Thanks
