so... i saw a truck outside with communications labeled on it, and i noticed they were working on the box behind the amplifier next to my house, so i asked the guys what they were doing, they are pulling strings to pull fiber through the neighborhood!
right now its just the thick rope, they are using a fish tape and a large air compressor to push it through the conduits.
they told me tomorrow they will use those ropes to pull fiber though, and they have 5000 feet to do. i asked them if they will take out the old coax, and they basically said it will get abandoned.
they are not the ones doing the fiber splicing, so maybe the fiber gets pulled, and just gets left alone for a while.
so i figured id just start my own thread to track (or not track) how long it takes to get what i assume will be rphy eventually.
assuming the signals will get better (snr) when they do finally do upgrades, but we shall see.

XB7 router thinks I'm in Pacific Time Zone
Hello,
I recently replaced an XB3 gateway with an XB7 device. However, every day since activating the new gateway, my electronic devices keep displaying the time as if I'm now in the Pacific Time Zone. I have been seeing this on an iPad, an Apple TV, and a Windows 10 laptop. Whenever I go into each device's settings, I will turn off any "set auto time zone" feature, change it to the Eastern time zone, and it shows the correct time. But if I turn the "set auto time zone" feature back on, it will turn the device's clock 3 hours back.
I think it's the XB7 gateway that's causing this, since it's happing across multiple devices (and across multiple operating systems). How do I fix this?

Netgear CM2000 vs Arris S33 vs Motorola MB8611
I know these 3 modems are fairly new, especially the Arris S33. I notice they all have a 2.5gb ethernet port, which I like for future proof. I am upgrading to a 1 gigabit internet with Xfiniy/Comcast.
Netgear CM2000 - $249
Motorola MB8611 - $169
Arris S33 - $169
Why is the Netgear so expensive? I don't mind buying the CM2000 but I would really like to know first if it's even worth it. Is the chipset different in each of these modems? Not sure which one to get.

[Speed] Modem reboot, now low speeds
It appears my modem rebooted last night. I am on the Gig tier and my speeds were 940+ down via the speedtest Windows app. I am now getting between 400-525. My modem is a Netgear CM2050v and the signals look good. Did they screw-up and send me the wrong config file?

Xfinity Stream (In home) cuts Gig speed to 250...
Just installed an XB7 today on the Gig plan and running normal speed tests, I'm hitting 1200+, but anytime I stream something that's considered In home, and not using my data, my speed drops to 250-280...Using Xfinity.com/Stream, this runs via the cable network so should not be touching the internet at all, and never counts against my 1.2tb data cap. If I close the stream, my speed goes right back to normal...

Best Way to Downgrade Service
I'm trying to help a family member lower their cable/internet bill. They're currently paying ~$180 a month for TV, internet, and phone service (see attached) when all they really need is a decent (100 - 200 Mbps) internet connection since they're pretty much streaming everything these days and only ever use their cell phone for phone calls. I've already acquired an Xfinity compatible modem and standalone router for them so they can stop renting Comcast equipment.
What is the best way to go about getting their services cut to save them money? Is there any chance I could get them downgraded to a new customer price for 200 Mbps internet for $40 a month? Xfinity is the only internet service available at their address, even though FIOS is available in 96.7% of their town according to broadbandnow.com, so I'm hopeful that Xfinity will be somewhat flexible since they're not a monopoly in the town.
If Comcast is unable or unwilling to downgrade their services to the $40 introductory price for 200 Mbps internet, would there be any issue with cancelling all of my relatives services while simultaneously signing up for a new, internet only service, with their name and address? Or will the Comcast system recognize this an not allow it?

[Speed] What markets still can't get gigabit?
We still have no DOCSIS 3.1 here in Northeast TN and are stuck on a 550MHz system. The only upgrades we get are the price hikes (which Comcast says are partially justified by having access to the "nation's largest Gigabit network"). Besides Northeast TN and some areas in rural Michigan, are there any other Comcast markets that still lack access to gigabit speeds?

IP assignment question, is it by physical address these days?
Edit: It's probably because I used the same router for both modems, can't believe I didn't realize that before posting this :p
Original:
Weird question, but hopefully someone will be able to follow this --
Modem A was on my account until 2017 when I got Modem B which was coincidental to upgrading to a 1000Mb plan, after installing Modem B I never saw Modem A on the account site.
Modem B was added in 2017 and active since even through a physical move of houses.
On Dec/31 my wife signed up for new service at out address to get us back on a promo rate, that account was not associated to any modem yet. It's a 200Mb plan.
Comcast automatically sent a 'cancellation received' email to my account after my wife's account was created.
Modem B, on my account, had a 66.1.2.3 IP, I know this because I have to white list it for work.
Modem A, on no account as far as I know, got a 24.1.2.3 IP when I power it on and I'm surprised to see it can get anywhere on the internet with speeds in the 280-350Mb range... edit: connected directly to a PC's NIC here, not router.
We activate my wife's account on Modem A using the activation site, I see Modem A listed in her account and after reboots following activation Modem A now maxes out around 200Mb.
A few days later I see both modems are still active despite Comcast saying my last day of service was several days earlier.
I unplug Modem B, which is associated to my account which is "cancelled".
In the process I restarted Modem A to move it, edit: to the router.
Modem A powered back up with 66.1.2.3 -- finally the question: How did Comcast decide to do that? Do they assign IP by physical address linked to an account these days?

2 routers connected to xb7 possible?
On my old att connection I had two routers connected to our modem (one for my stuff, the other for the rest of my family). Is this possible with Comcast? I read in another post it would only assign one WAN IP? Maybe I read it wrong.

[Equip] Can I still use a voice modem and an internet modem at once
I recall reading information a few years ago that Comcast would allow folks to use a voice compatible modem at the same time as a 3.1 modem. When I bought my modem, I went with the Netgear CM500V, which is capped at 680 mbps, but it has Voice compatibility. Since I really didn't need the extra speed of a 3.1 modem, and 3.1 modems with Voice weren't available, I just went with the CM500V.
Fast forward to today. Just caught wind that they're instituting a 1.2 TB cap per month. I'm also off contract, so I checked my available deals and I can get a Triple Play with 1200 speeds for less than I'm paying now, but I'll need a 3.1 modem to get the 1200 speeds.
First option would be to get the Netgear 1150V, but it's $250. But it'll work without issues.
Second option would be to get a cheaper 3.1 modem, like the CM1200 and continue to use the CM500V just for voice.
I can no longer find any information on how to set up two modems in this fashion. Xfinity's forum had a few posts, but they're locked for some reason. Leads me to believe that perhaps Comcast no longer supports setting up modems like this.
Can anyone shed some light on this subject? If this kind of set-up is still allowed, are there resources or posts that explain how to connect and configure the modems?
Thanks,
ft

Comcast says they can't update my Modems firmware?
Hello again,
I have a question. My brother has a Motorola MG7550 modem that we purchased years ago so we wouldn't have to lease the modem. Today when he was looking at tier speeds I asked him to get the tech to make sure it was running the latest firmware and my brother told me that the tech told him that they do not provide firmware updates for non leased modems. Is this true, because I have a very hard time believing that.
Thanks for any advice you can give us.

[Caps] Cap now in place, usage down
Now that we have caps in town I just checked my usage and I’m at 80 GB as of the 15th of the month when I average 200-400 GB per month.
I wonder if their method of measuring data has changed, particularly with zero rating. I get 95 percent of my video through my cable box in the living room and the other five percent via the Xfinity Stream app on my Roku stick in the bedroom upstairs.

[Equip] Time for an Upgrade
Hi all... think it's time for an upgrade. My current Netgear CM700V and ASUS RT-AC66U router setup has been performing great (2.4 GHz WiFi is slow due to congestion in my neighborhood), but Comcast upgraded my plan to 400/20 from 300/20 a couple months ago, and the aging ASUS's 2.4 GHz radio has been getting flaky in the last couple weeks. Today it went out completely; fortunately the 5 GHz side was still working so I could use the ASUS app with my iPhone on 5GHz to access and restore it.
So I'm thinking of upgrading to a Netgear CM1150V (yes, we need voice, and don't need a 2.5E port) and a Netgear MK62 Mesh system to get better WiFi coverage in the front of our house and garage. I already have a Netgear Gigabit switch to handle all the wired devices upstairs in the loft / ham shack / server room.
Thoughts or suggestions?
Cheers and Happy New Year!
Dave

How are my signal levels? (Gigabit - speeds inconsistent)
I had my service installed Monday and i've been able to get around 940 Mbps down sometimes, but other times i'll only get around 300-500 Mbps. I think from my research these signal levels look good? If this isn't the correct information please let me know and i'll look elsewhere in the modem stats. (Sorry these arent sorted better, I couldn't get it to copy right, but each category is in the same order as the channel index)

Did Xfinity turn off 2.4ghz hotspots?
Looks like whole neighborhood is only 5ghz xfinitywifi. Did Xfinity turn off residential 2.4ghz hotspots?
Noticed my gateway is no longer broadcasting 2.4ghz hotspot for older devices to use only 5ghz. Tried disabling and re-enabling hotspot even factory reset. Checked with multi devices with SSID scanner.

Yesterday, activated new Arris S33 (swapped out existing Arris SB6141)
Received within 10 minutes of activation an email using same Arris S33 and my router and my private at home SSID
.. Thank you for activating ..Your Internet service is ready for you to use
All TV Streams using STREAM app (Samsung S7 WiFi Android 10) working fine, all channels worked.
10 hours later, anything other than NBC (which is comcast channel) comes up with Please connect to your in-home WiFi and on bottom Out of Home ..unknown SSID..
I am at home, using my own modem and router and typing this on same.
Xfinity tech support has restarted the Arris S33 multiple times. No change.
The /devices page on my logon profile shows the Arris S33 and correct MAC address
The generic XFINITY Android app shows ARRIS GROUP, INC. S33 ONLINE with a blue checkmark
Logging in to a Windows laptop, using Vivaldi (or Chrome or Firefox) also comes up with message to Connect to in-home WiFi to watch - message
Only NBC allows watching via stream
I do not own a TV device, only phones, laptops and tablets

Upgrading upload speed for security cameras
Happy New Year everybody. May this year be way way better than last! Good riddance to 2020!
I'm not a network tech - just a former electronics R&D tech from the 60's, who's learned a little about this. :-)
We're in the Denver area and have Xfinity for voip phone and high speed internet. 2 adults, 2 PC's and 2 TV's. Been using a TM822G owned by us, with a Linksys AC1900 Dual Band Open Source WiFi Wireless Router (WRT1900ACS), which was originally higher power, but was reduced by a firmware upgrade. ( we have to cover an 80 ft long house ). The PC's use just their wifi and work fine, and I added a D-Link Wireless AC1200 Dual Band Wi-Fi Gigabit Range Extender & Access Point (DAP-1650) for each TV. Those all work fine.
But we recently switched to a new home security company, and got 3 cameras installed with it. It seems that they need more upload speed than the plan we have, which is 5Gbps. The security company suggests at least 10Gbps.
So I got with Xfinity and they suggested upgrading to 400/10 service. We did, BUT it got flaky immediately. Turns out that their chat people told me that the new plan doesn't work with the TM822G. Arghhh. So they put it back last night, but I don't know if they re-provisioned it again, because today's test stinks. ( They may have the day off today, and I certainly won't blame them for that. So do I. :-) )
But in the meantime, they referred me to a page with modem options, which they say they can set up for me, and if I want, I can even buy my own, or just keep theirs and rent.
SO my first question is, which of these is the best affordable option. And should I still use my Linksys router, or is one of their modems a better high powered choice for reaching the whole house? Remember that the security cameras are outside the house, up on the eaves, so they're now the most distant sources that must be reached. The Linksys has adjustable antennas, and I'm wondering if I can revert to the original firmware and restore the higher power, or if we need to. The TV's are fine, and the security cams are transmitting - not receiving.
Happy New Year, all of you.
