[Connectivity] unable to access slice of internet

This morning we didn't have any access to the internet. We were using OpenDNS servers, and it turned out that I didn't have a route to those servers. I temporarily reconfigured the system to use a different set of DNS servers (Google for now). The issue is that I can't access certain sites, not even by pinging the actual ip address. For example, opendns.com or news.ycombinator.com. It is like I don't have access to a slice of the internet. If I use data from the nearest cellular tower, I don't have any problem accessing those sites, and for what it is worth, sites like isitdownrightnow.com show those sites to be fine. I have tried a direct connection to the modem, but with the same effect. Any ideas what this might be? I have not encountered this problem before, and not even sure how to quantify it to look for others with a similar issue. Edit: I should add, I'm using Comcast cable connection with Arris 6183, and am in the central Indiana area.
