Hello,
I just became a Comcast internet customer, but have no success of being connected. I have my own modem (Surfboard SBG6580) but the connection status at the admin page says "Access Denied." The persistent issue still happening.
The firmware version is
SBG6580-3.1.0.0-GA-07-180-NOSH. Apparently, one of the oldest. I also read in the forum that this problem was solved with the recent firmware but I cannot update the firmware myself.
Apparently this is a known issue as I searched online (this forum particularly) and people suggested PMing Netcool as the problem cannot be solved by the customer. Probably the best idea, but the DSLReports does not allow PM within 8 hours after new account creation ;( Also I do not think posting my MAC address on the public form is a good idea.
(Well, never mind. The MAC address is REMOVED . I will remove it later.)
I know this is Sunday and employees have to have a rest, but is there any faster way to solve this problem before I can wait 8 hours? (Hopefully the NetDog's automated tool may pick up my post and solve it for me...) Thanks in advance for the suggestions.

Cold Weather Signals
Since there is cold weather throughout a lot of the northern and eastern US right now, I thought it would be interesting to look at how the extreme cold is impacting signal levels.
This is my mom'd setup, the drop is maybe 60ft long from the pole to the demarc box on the back of the house, there's a MoCA filter on the ground block, then there's a short piece of cable to a 9db tap, then connected to the thru port of the tap is maybe 50ft of cable that leads up through the soffit into the attic and down to the licing room, through another 9db tap, then through 2 MoCA filters and 2 6db FPAs.
The signals have been around -4 to -5dbmv but have been up by about 3db in the -10° weather. I should probably remove the extra MoCA filter I only have it on the line because there used to have a 3-way splitter in the location but then my mom ditched her phone service so when I switched to the tap from the splitter I had the extra MoCA filter and I didn't have a good place to put it to where it wouldn't get dirty/dusty I just left it in line I figured the little extra bit of attenuation on the pass band didn't really hurt and the extra rejection of MoCA bands is no problem. I also could remove one of those FPAs, I only had one on the line but then like 2 weeks ago her internet started acting weird and the power levels were much higher, we ended having to call for a tech visit because I found that the power levels were way too high at the demarc and several channels came up unkown and the channels it could still lock properly had crappy SNRs of like 27db, interesting thing is the day the tech was suppose to visit we woke up and the internet was perfect again and the signal power levels were back to a reasonable level, must have been a plant issue that maintenance corrected in the background so we ended up cancelling the tech visit.

Bad Coax Cable from Self Install Kit?
Did a SIK yesterday and all went well but noticed that if I move the modem and therefore also moving the included coax I lose connection.
If I leave it alone and not touch anything in the closet I get great service and ran a constant ping test for hours with no packet loss. Once moved even slightly, I start dropping packets to whatever I'm pinging.
Seems explanatory that it's a cable issue. Or could this be a signal issue? Are the ranges in the FAQ still optimal for the 200/10 service?

Any one have experience with this router? Thinking of buying one to replace my old DIR 835 with DDWRT. Seems like the Synology router has some cool features. And seems to be easier to use then DDWRT. Wanted to know if anyone has used it for a while and what their thoughts are.

[Connectivity] TPLink TC-7620 only connects at 100 but it has a gigabit port
I've also posted this on the Comcast forum as well as contacted Comcast and TPLink but have made no progress.
----
I have a TPLink TC-7620
This has a Gigabit ethernet port but I only connect at 100.
I've tried connecting through a router and directly with a laptop. Each only connects at 100
It has the following config d11_m_tc7620_speedtierextreme2_c01.cm
The admin page doesn't give the option to set a static speed so I can't force it.
My laptop detects 1000 if I connect to anything other than my cable modem.
I've reset the modem a couple of times.
I've also tried introducing a switch between the modem and the router as suggested in a similar thread.
I've tried several ethernet cables.
any ideas?
thanks

[Connectivity] Help / Advice with Signal Levels on new Netgear CM1000...
Guys, I posted earlier when I was trying to decide on which modems to get, and I ultimately I went with a CM1000 and older / cheaper eMTA for voice only, the TM822G. Now I've been playing around with the wiring. My house is only a couple of years old, but they did run a new feed to the house about 6 months before I moved in, due to signal issues the previous owner was having. The feed originally came in on white coax and goes into an evo-1-9-U/U 9 Port Active Return Amplifier Coax Splitter. I had the previous Xfinity Wireless Telephony Gateway in Bridge mode connected to the -3.5dB voice modem tap on the evo. The cable to each of the bedrooms was then split off the 9 port splitter.
Now I've moved to DirecTV in all the bedrooms except one. I'm not sure if the Comcast feed should come into a SV2G splitter and 1 side going to the CM1000 and the other going to the evo 9 port input with the one bedroom hooked to one of the standard outputs on the evo and my voice only modem on the voice modem tap of the evo. Here are my signal levels on the CM1000 with it hooked up the way I just described. It seems my SNR looks low to me, but I am not positive.

[Plan] Side Discussion on DOCSIS 3.1 Gigabit service
Mod Note: This topic started as "XI Gigabit DOCSIS 3.1 - data cap with 3-year agreement?" It has become a general discussion of this deployment, hence the title change. uid://455626
If you actually have had this service installed, the stickied report topic is here. > https://www.dslreports.com/forum/r30960001-Speed-Report-DOCSIS-3-1-Gigabit-Service-Here If you report, please include info requested in the first post and keep that topic strictly on topic. Thanks, sortofageek
The XI Gigabit DOCSIS 3.1 is now available in my area. I am tempted to sign up. Early reports said unlimited data with a 3-year agreement. The Comcast website says nothing but the typical disclaimer about the data usage plan. I don't want to sign a 3-year agreement for a plan with a data cap. Does anyone know if the XI Gigabit service is subject to the data usage nonsense?

[Connectivity] Direct cable modem connection much slower than being connected to router?
Hello I have Xfinity Performance Pro internet. When I do a direct ethernet connection from the cable modem (Zoom Docsis 3.0) to my desktop. The internet is very slow. I mean loading a news article takes time.
But when I run that ethernet cable from my modem to a Netgear Nighthawk AC1900, and a cat 5 from my desktop to the back of one of the router ports (no wifi for my desktop), the speed is much faster.
Why is this?
How are my cable modem signals?

[Bill] Is sales tax normal on the first bill?
So many of you may have noticed that I now have Comcast on this thread https://www.dslreports.com/forum/r31171938-Plan-Comcast-is-coming-to-my-complex-COMPLETED
and I'm glad to announce that I love my service. It's fast and speedy, and I can now say that Comcast, whilst being the best in service and utterly pitiful in their ethics, can finally raise our property value after ten years living in this shitty apartment complex that's so expensive with its HOA fees per MONTH.
OTOH, I'm rather confused about this itemised charge on the billquote:State And Local Sales Tax 10.36
and I'm wondering, is this completely normal on the first month's bill or will it possibly reoccur every month?
It seems expensive for sales tax. (Sales tax here in texas is 8.25% and the bill was $161.13 since I chose the Blast Pro speeds).

[DOCSIS] DOCSIS 3.1 makes downloads slower than DOCSIS 3.0?!?
About 6 weeks ago, as it was time, I purchased a new modem and activated it. The modem is an ARRIS SB8200 DOCSIS 3.1 modem, my prior modem was an older DOCSIS 3.0 modem. I live in the Baltimore area. My tier is extreme 150, 150/20, on comcast's speed tests I get about 178/24. Signals are all good, I recently had my lines checked by Comcast and I actually removed an old switch to a TV cable that's no longer used, so it is a straight shot of cable to my modem.
After activation of the SB8200, everything was fine - 178/24 down/up, approximately. But then last week, we had a power outage from a rain storm, and power was out for 2 hours. When power came back on, the first thing I noticed was that the lights had changed - formerly on the 8200 all lights were green, specifically d/l and u/l lights were green, which means DOCSIS 3.0. Now, d/l light is blue - meaning DOCSIS 3.1! I wondered, is DOCSIS 3.1 in the area now and my d/l speed has increased?
With excitement I ran the speed test in off hours, and to my surprise d/l speed was around 145 - it had gone down! U/l speed is still the same, 24. Over the last week I have continued to test it, always the same - 142-148. There are zero errors, and the signals look good to me (see picture below).
I am on an Arris CMTS. It's MAC address: CMTS-MAC=00:01:5c:6f:ee:68. My firmware appears to the the latest, D31CM-PEREGRINE-1.0.1.0-GA-04-NOSH.
So it seems the use of DOCSIS 3.1 is slowing down the downloads - and a significant amount, about 20% - why would that be? A local comcast guy said "We are getting our plant ready to launch docsis 3.1 across our footprint. It is not fully launched in all areas. This just may be temporary until we are fully launched."
I know others have reported this problem too, what I wasn't able too find was, has it been fixed, or is it temporary? Is there a way to manually drop the 8200 down to DOCSIS 3.0 for the time being? Thanks!

[Other] Xfinity cablem modems just started calling home to google ?
Hi,
newby to this forum. I like to think I'm a bit of a geek and I like my privacy. I also like to think my system is fairly well instrumented so a couple days ago when I saw part of the system reporting odd traffic to google, which I dont use, to the point of having it firewalled, I decided to peer deeper into this since I thought I must have left a security hole open somewhere. The packets in question happen very often, every few minutes which is what caught my attention. After putting sniffers of every interface I determined _none_ of this traffic was inside my firewall, it appeared to be at the cable modem (I said I was instrumented but I wont say here exactly how I came to this conclusion...). I did some tests to make sure this was not a quirk. I power cycled modem and the traffic came right back. I then forced the internet IP to change a couple times and the traffic came back again. The Google IP in question is fixed for me but appears to be probably geolocated based on of IPs in the block so I wont post it here but it is in this block that the call to google is headed.
NetRange: 74.125.0.0 - 74.125.255.255
CIDR: 74.125.0.0/16
NetName: GOOGLE
Since I log all traffic on the network I was able to determine when this first started to happen. It started Dec 14 right after the FCC votes to repeal net neutrality. I find that interesting. I am going to try the same monitoring on some other peoples cable connections and if I confirm what I suspect, well bad to be these guys. I wonder if googlespygate.com is available.
So first look says to me Xfinity turned on some direct logging from peoples cable modemds to google once the Net rules were repealed.
WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THIS XFINITY ?

Comcast IMAP Server Issues?
Has anyone else experienced intermittent connection problems with Comcast's IMAP servers over the past couple of weeks?
Everything was operating smoothly here for years and it's just gone to hell lately. Almost unusable at this point.
Windows 10 Pro with Live Mail as the client. I did review all the settings for Comcast's IMAP servers to be sure everything (ports, etc.) were up to date. No issue there.
Since the settings appear to be correct and I don't see anyone else complaining in here, could it be Live Mail? I really don't want to buy Outlook because the reviews make it sound like a buggy PoS.
In before someone tells me to switch over the Gmail exclusively. (I may do that someday, but not today ... a gargantuan pain in the ass with hundreds of accounts that would need to be changed even using LastPass).
