[Connectivity] Question about MoCA 2.0, splitters and upstream power level.

$

I'm currently using MoCA 1.1 and want to upgrade to MoCA bonded 2.0. I read somewhere that MoCA 2.0 doesn't work as well through splitters that aren't rate for MoCA . My outside splitter is from Comcast and I tried to get them to replace it with a newer once, but the frequency range for the ones they have are 5 to 1002 Mhz which means they will block MoCA signals. I bought my own 3-way splitter with a frequency range of 5 to 2400 Mhz to replace the one Comcast installed. That won't block MoCA, but the one I got was balanced with a 5.5 dbMV loss per leg. My old splitter wasn't balanced and I had my modem on the 3.5 dbMV leg. As a result of this my upstream power level went from 46.5, 48.0 and 48.5 dBmV to 50.0, 51.5 and 52.0 dbMV. That's what it is currently, but when it gets hotter out I suspect it will get higher. My question I guess is will MoCA 2.0 work through the splitter that Comcast gives up which is only rated up to 1002 Mhz? If not is there someplace to get a non-balanced MoCA 2.0 compatible splitter?

Getting ping spikes. High power levels? Not sure how to proceed

I've been getting somoe bad ping spikes lately and my modem power levels seem pretty high. I live in an older townhome that I rent and the coaxial connecting to my modem has one two way splitter. It goes to a TV nearby and the cable modem. The splitter and cables are pretty old but I tried removing the splitter and connecting the cable modem directly but it only decreased the upstream power by about 2 dBmV. The cable connecting to the cable modem is pretty old and long (20 feet) and I don't have any spare cables but that's the only thing left I can think of that may be causing an issue. I've tried to locate where the cable comes in externally but I couldn't spot any obvious places so I'm not sure where else to look. Are there any other self troubleshooting steps I can take before I call a tech in? I'd like to avoid getting charged if possible. Should I try ordering a new cable and splitter from monoprice? Would a new cable modem help? I'm using the SB6183. [att=1]

I heard today that beginning 6/26 Blast! internet tier is changing from 100/10 to 150/5, and Extreme 150 is going from 150/20 to 250/10. I have Blast, and I want my 5 meg back on my US. I don't care about getting an extra 50 down, 100 is more than fast enough.

[Security] Comcast website bug leaks customer data

FYI - A bug in Comcast's website used to activate Xfinity (leased) routers can be exploited to reveal other customers' home addresses, router SSIDs and passwords: Comcast website bug leaks Xfinity customer data Exclusive: A bug in Comcast's website leaks sensitive customer information By Zack Whittaker, ZDNet - May 21, 2018 https://www.zdnet.com/article/comcast-bug-leaks-xfinity-home-addresses-wireless-passwords/quote:A bug in Comcast's website used to activate Xfinity routers can return sensitive information on the company's customers. The website https://register.be.xfinity.com/activate , used by customers to set up their home internet and cable service, can be tricked into displaying the home address where the router is located, as well as the Wi-Fi name and password. Two security researchers, Karan Saini and Ryan Stevenson, discovered the bug. Saini, who previously discovered an Uber two-factor bypass bug and a flaw in India's national biometric database, told ZDNet about the bug. Only a customer account ID and that customer's house or apartment number is needed -- even though the web form asks for a full address. That information could be grabbed from a discarded bill or obtained from an email. In any case, a determined attacker could simply guess the house or apartment number. ZDNet obtained permission from two Xfinity customers to check their information. We were able to obtain their full address and zip code -- which both customers confirmed. The site returned the Wi-Fi name and password -- in plaintext -- used to connect to the network for one of the customers who uses an Xfinity router. The other customer was using his own router -- and the site didn't return the Wi-Fi network name or password. The bug returns data even if the Xfinity Wi-Fi is already switched on. Even when the Wi-Fi password changes, running the details again will return the new Wi-Fi password. There appears to be no way for customers to opt out when using Xfinity hardware. It's also possible to rename Wi-Fi network names and passwords, temporarily locking users out. Saini said that it would be nearly impossible to enumerate account numbers. Although it's not believed the sensitive data can be used to access the router's settings, an attacker could use the information to access the Wi-Fi network within its range. On the network, an attacker could read unencrypted traffic from other users on the network. Comcast, after publication, removed the option from its website. "There's nothing more important than our customers' security," said a Comcast spokesperson. "Within hours of learning of this issue, we shut it down. We are conducting a thorough investigation and will take all necessary steps to ensure that this doesn't happen again." [Signals] Why so much bounce in upstream.

My upstream levels on my MB8600 have been bouncing around the last couple weeks. We have had some rain, lighting and thunderstorms which I thought may cause this, but it's doing it when there is no weather problem. It doesn't seem to be effecting service, no drop offs or anything like that just curious as to whats going on with it.

I seen to lose connection every couple months for several hours - most recent was from 8pm July 18 to 7am July 19th. Things are working OK now but I wonder if there is an issue here. Attached are signal details and log. I see T3 timeouts and tftp errors (trying to get modem config?) Does anything look wrong?

Connectivity Issues - can only browse secure websites - https://

Can anyone shed some light on this? Comcast has been less than helpful. I am unable to reach a number of websites. There is no general connectivity problem, it is just certain websites (though a fairly substantial number it seems). Activating my VPN resolves the issue. I ran traceroutes both when connected thru the VPN and not. Basically, it reaches the destination when connected to the VPN and starts timing out after around 10+ hops when not connected the the VPN. As an example, PBSKids.org is unreachable until I turn the VPN on and then it works fine. Home Depot is another example. There are more. Comcast wants to send a tech out which doesn't make much sense to me. Any thoughts?

Is there a rule of thumb regarding the number of downstream channels that a modem has and its maximum capable speed? Real world numbers, rather than the theoretical speeds that can be found in most spec sheets.

[Equip] Comcast letter about equipment

I have had Comcast gigabit service since whenever it came out in my area (over a year). I was given a Technicolor modem and Netgear R8000. I have not used the router except for occasionally as I wanted to continue using my R7000 because I have dd-wrt firmware installed on it. Also, the R8000 is quite similar except for another 5ghz radio which is not needed and with the addition of the shortcut forward engine code to dd-wrt I can get around 667mbits/sec or more download with my R7000. I received a letter today that says, "We recently identified a technical issue with the modem and router you're currently using. We want to make sure your're getting the most out of your service, so we've shipped a replacement to you at no additional cost." The letter also says that it is a wireless gateway and that I will need to return the other equipment. I do not want a comcast wireless gateway because I have my own router so I called and told them I do not want it and that I'll get a modem. She did not see that it has shipped and she put in the notes that I will get my own modem. I am deciding between the choices I have. I have been leaning toward the Motorola for a while now. My question for the forum is about the "technical issue". I know that the VPN filter attack affects the r7000s that have the Netgear firmware (they may have an update by now), and the 8000 is (edited out: 7800 which isn't), on which I did an update of the Netgear firmware the other day even though I don't use it. Is this an issue where comcast is reacting to that, something like it, is it a Technicolor issue, or an issue with both?

Slow IPV6 1st. time connections to google.com - mainly in SeaMonkey (akin to FF 52). (In addition to 1st time connections, there must be some "timeout", "reset" period, when this will also occur.) IPV6 Win7 & XP (& kind of Win10) Comcast in two separate locations, residential & business (Maryland) Arris (192.168.100.1) TM822G modem (on the residential end, & no router) (I have reset the modem, pin in the hole trick) SLOW, ~20000 ms slow No issues with IPV4 New Profiles Set google.com to be your search engine, if need be Open SeaMonkey F12 to open the browser "Tools", click the 'Network' tab Type a non-URL into the Location bar, so, 'google' will work Observe Disable IPV6 (I did through, Control Panel, Networking, LAN, uncheck IPV6, then ipconfig /flushdsn) Repeat above This is a recent situation. Same setups, same browsers, no issues in the past. I have not noticed (& not that I was looking) any other issues at any other sites. Note that google is https: (obviously, & in case that matters). mozillazine thread: Google Search SLOW. Last (Win7) updates were installed 6/18/2018. Might this issue have coincided with them? KB3185319, security update for IE11 (don't even ask how I got suckered into installing that!) KB890830, MS's malware tool (for June) KB4284826, 2018-06 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 x64-based Systems SeaMonkey build date is 06-11-2018 (just now pulled a build of 06-26-2018 with no change). Ideas?

As mentioned in this recent DSLR news item https://www.dslreports.com/shownews/Comcast-Prepares-For-Mid2017-Wireless-Service-Launch-139048 , Comcast is planning a mid-year launch of their wireless service. Comcast announced today that they will be providing the details on this new service on Thursday: Comcast to Host Analyst Event to Discuss Launch of Mobile Initiative Comcast press release, Business Wire - April 3, 2017 http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20170403005198/en/Comcast-Host-Analyst-Event-Discuss-Launch-Mobilequote:On Thursday, April 6, 2017, Comcast will host an analyst event to discuss the details of its previously announced mobile initiative, which utilizes an existing MVNO agreement. Senior members of the Comcast leadership team will participate in the event. ...There is also this FierceCable article today about it: Comcast sets Thursday meeting with investors to discuss wireless launch By Daniel Frankel, FierceCable - April 3, 2017 http://www.fiercecable.com/cable/comcast-sets-thursday-meeting-investors-to-discuss-wireless-launchquote:Some of the telecom industry’s most closely guarded secrets could finally be revealed Thursday, when Comcast hosts what it calls an “analyst event to discuss the details of its previously announced mobile initiative.” : Comcast confirmed plans to launch a wireless service combining the strengths of its vast Wi-Fi network and its MVNO deal with Verizon back in September. The launch has been slated for sometime later this year. : Last week, FierceWireless reported that Comcast is quietly partnering with Apple as it prepares to launch wireless service under the brand Xfinity Mobile: http://www.fiercewireless.com/wireless/comcast-quietly-taps-iphone-ahead-launch-xfinity-mobile The cable giant’s name has been added to behind-the-scenes - but publicly available - code that lists carrier bundles for the iPhone. The list of carrier bundles is used by iTunes and iPhones to determine whether the iPhone’s SIM is supported by a service provider with whom Apple has an agreement, then provisions the phone accordingly. The iPhone's latest list of carrier bundles includes "Verizon_Comcast_LTE_US," and mentions the service "Xfinity Mobile." A source pointed out the reference to FierceWireless, and a different source with knowledge of the matter confirmed that Comcast has indeed partnered with Apple ahead of the launch of Xfinity Mobile. 1) Location Chicago 2) . I've been having extremely slow connection speeds since June 15. Had a tech out yesterday and they just suggested I replace my Netgear CM1000 as the signals were fine, although phone troubleshooting tech said I had analog interference issue... I did buy a new modem and provisioned it yesterday , same issue still persists. I'm still only seeing upload speeds on average of 3-5 mbps. Downloads are 400-700 , testing both on the eero hard wired and wireless. http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest/35156095 , I had a neighbor behind me with a Comcast tech out yesterday as well for issues with intermittent connectivity and VoIP issues, the tech was making repairs to the shared main line strung over the aerial poles in our shared alley. 3) Issue started on or around June 15. 4) Netgear CM1000 , Hardware Version 2.02 Firmware Version V3.01.04 5) Network setup: CM1000 , connected to main eero , 4 other eero APs in the home (3 wired , 1 mesh -- includes 1 in a detached garage (wired) ) Info from my modem: Cable Connection Apply Cancel Frequency start Value This field below allows you to modify the frequency the cable modem start with its scan during initialization and registration. So long story short... based on suggestions here, a MONTH ago I started the process of trying to get residential internet service on a house that previously had a comcast business account (and address doesn't show on Xfinity residential site). The "Executive Response Team" contact I had originally couldn't find any promotions anywhere close to the pricing on their website, often took multiple days to get back to me after I had to email him for status, etc..... really not impressed w/ how they handled this. So now, he was finally able to place an order for 150 mbit service at the promo price listed for the neighborhood on the xfinity website... but he couldn't get me an install date until July 10th. He's waiving the install fee. There's already a comcast business drop in the house. I have a brand new mb8600 modem ready to go. Shouldn't I be able to plug it in and self activate rather than being without service for a week and a half? I have an order number for the service but no account number yet. Thanks for any advice!

Out of the blue my internet stopped and the activation page showed up. After that internet does not work. At first I don't try to re-activate, worried about a virus. Try the usual restart modem.I went to Xfinity website on my phone and it states internet is working. After a while I did the re-activation and it's working again. I have my own modem that has been working for over a year, no issues. Prior I had an Xfinity modem, same no problems. TV did not go out. Any ideas why this happened? Is this going to continue?
