[Event-Log] Suggest FAQ to give details about the various event log items

I'm hoping someone could write an FAQ to explain various modem log error messages, please. I've been noticing several folks lately asking if "this" (fill in name of event item) error message is a problem - for whatever the error message is. I believe this would be helpful to Xfinity HSI folks here if the tech savvy folks would write one. Thanks.

Very laggy, No Internet errors, random no ethernet nor wifi

Last week I had a different problem (see below for that problem.) Current problem: On Friday, a tech switched out my Comcast leased modem-router for a TG1682G. I forgot what model I had that was replaced. My connect, after the new modem, worked fine until Monday. Starting Monday, I noticed a little lag, was dropped from a game I frequently play. Rare that I experience either but it happens from time to time. Then Monday night it progressively got worse. It got more laggy and I started getting "no internet" warnings in Chrome and in Edge. This would happen for a minute or so, then it would be good again for about 5 to 10 minutes, then more lag and errors. Also, in the game, I would get cut after just a few minutes over and over. None of that stuff has every happened since I have had Comcast service which goes back to early 2012. After an hour or so of the lag and errors, my PC network indicator would go red (no connection) and I would have no connection. Trying 10.0.0.1, I would get no response. All that was on a PC via an ethernet connection. My wifi devices could also not connect, nor could other ethernet connected devices (all would give no network connection when queried about network status.) The modem would appear fine. All its light would be on indicating it was working fine. I would turn off the modem, let it reboot, and everything would work fine but only for a short time. The above described bad to worse progression would repeat after just 5 to 10 minutes. I went through that scenario of reboot, to normal to worse to no connection a few times last night. Today it has been a little better. The lag periods have not been as bad and not as severe and they do not last as long but they are noticeable and a night and day difference in how my internet normally is. There has been only one actual lost connection today as of this writing. On the new problem, I called Comcast yesterday. A tech said my modem numbers, when she checked remotely, did not look very good. She arrange for a tech to come out. I went into the portal of 10.0.0.1 to check on it myself after that call. SNR was around 40dB on all channels, which as I recall is where it normally is for my connection. The CM Error Codewords seemed high. On every channel, there were about 21 thousand to over 40 thousand Uncorrectable Codewords. Unerrorered Codewords were 8 million to 11 million on each channel. Based on the above described problem, does it sound like a faulty modem-router? Is there something I should request a tech do when one comes to look at this problem? In case it is relevant, the original problem last week: That problem was different. No connection for about 20 hours (tried many reboots of modem and none worked.) In those cases, only the power light would come-on on the modem, with US/DS light flashing very fast and all the other lights off. A tech came and replaced that unit, but I am not sure the old unit was to blame. At the same time that tech came, a field crew was in front of my house. They were working on the drop box that feeds the cable that connects to my house. (similar crews had been near my house all week - they are expanding the node.) They finished their work before the tech and I went into my house to check on my modem. When we got to the modem, all its light were on, appearing to be working. I did not test it in its new state because the tech immediately turned it off to disconnect it. That work-crew project might have been why it was out for 20 hours and it did not need to be replaced. Another issue: when the tech was at my house, a field supervisor came to my door. He wanted to talk to the other tech. I got her and I also joined the conversation. He came looking for her because he was puzzled why she was at my house, since the markings on her Comcast vehicle indicated she was in an area far away. After the two talked, he determined that I was clearly on the node his crew was expanding but before that moment he did not know I existed because Comcast had me listed as being in a node 20 miles away (Comcast had my right address etc. but noted that I was on a different node than I really was.) He said he would fix that. I was concerned that changing my account might cause problems since before my service was always good until now. He said nothing physical would change about my service. He said I was physically on his node and that would not change - he would just correct Comcast's records for my correct listed node. I wanted to add the last part in case it shed any light on my current problem. A Comcast tech, on the phone, told me he had no knowledge of nodes etc. and it was way over his head.

Does Comcast not push modem firmware anymore?

I was told by someone at Comcast that the hardware manufacture is responsible for firmware, and they have nothing to do with it. How is this the case when Netgear says firmware is pushed out by the ISP?

[Connectivity] Legal to hire private contractor to run cable to my home?

Hello All, I am looking to move out to the Sultan, WA area and need to run cable to my prospective new home. We need roughly 1400ft of aerial cable run down the street. I have been in communication with Comcast in regards to this and have gotten an estimate of around $27,000 to run the cable. While we are willing to pay that price, regardless of how absurdly expensive that is, we would of course love to not have to pay that much if at all possible. I was told by a relative that it might be possible (also faster and cheaper) to hire an independent contractor to run the cable instead of getting Comcast to do it. Comcast, not to my surprise, is dragging their feet on this time sensitive project even though we are willing to pay them for this. My question: Is it legal to hire an independent contractor to run the aerial cable? If so, would it require Comcast to finish the job at the house after the cable is run or can I simply buy\lease a modem and get an IP assigned to it to setup service? Thank you for your help in advance.

New to Xfinity- MOCA on XB6

I just purchased Xfinity for a new house and have never had Comcast before. I bought the 250Mpps service and decided on the Advanced Gateway XB6 (Technicolor) as it seemed to have the same mesh functionality I had at my other home. I also ordered Xfi Pods a week later which have not been delivered. In the meantime, I am getting poor Wifi to a main TV in the basement where there is a cable outlet so I pulled out my ActionTech Moca adapter expecting that I could just plug it in and have it work. Well, I get power to the unit but no access at the device once connected to the ethernet cable. Is there something that Comcast has to do? I cannot see anything in the very limited setups in the router that I need to do and the all knowing Internet seems to have little on this specific to the new gateways. Can they be activated to give me MOCA? Would I be better served to just buy a compatible modem that supports MOCA (would Comcast still have to do something on this setup as well?) and go back to my Orbi setup I was using, or is the Xfi system with Pods about the same? I don't mind the $11 per month if I get good results.

[Connectivity] Comcast XB6-T not locking all available upstream channels.

Staying with family this weekend and I noticed their gateway is not locking all the available upstream channels. As seen on the status page, it sees the channels no problem and power levels are within spec. This has been a problem for at least the past month and I was hoping that it would clear up on its own. Rebooting the XB6-T router is not solving the problem. Thinking it was a plant issue, I brought my MB8600 and tested it here and it locks all three channels without a problem. Any suggestions on what to do next? Trying to avoid calling Comcast on this one. Other than not getting the full 35Mbps upload on their Gigabit plan, there haven't been any actual connectivity problems.

[Equip] New Performance 55 service, DPC3941T gateway, Puma 6?

For the last, I'm seeing Puma 6 over here: https://www.dslreports.com/hardware/Cisco-DPC3941-h4021 and Search doesn't work, go figure, so here we go! I helped GF order and work with a tech to install her new internet-only account. The device shipped in the self-install kit looks to have VOIP capabilities, which tech and I surmised is SOP to ease a future up-sell. It's $11/mo. for modem lease and we won't change that for the 30-day money-back trial period, at least. I've got an SB6183 and Linksys EA3500 on the shelf that could provide for monthly savings, or we could possibly buy something more suitable for an amortized savings. OTOH, there might be an advantage to pay $11 to have smoother tech support for not-so-tech-savvy people. Mostly, her family of four uses smartphones, tablets, and a Mac laptop to wirelessly use internet. There's a PS4 that might get occasionally used and, less frequently, a Roku tv. I'm seeing something called Xfi where connected devices can be monitored and paused, this having some potential for an 8 y.o. if he misbehaves but not so high-probability. There is quote:Protected Browsing Enable to reduce the risk of devices connected to your home network from accessing sites/apps known to host malicious content.that might be a valuable feature for those not so circumspect about browsing. All the devices are Apple or Android, which might not show so much benefit as another OS, idk. I thought I saw some more granular parental restrictions that might be useful for the youngest kid but I haven't been able to find it since. He's a pretty good kid. My first reason for posting was to ask whether this Xfi application on PC and Android would be available with a customer-owned modem not leased by Comcast? Then, I noticed a potential bonus concern about Puma 6. Thanks for any advice.

Xfinity bandwidth metering vs router metering difference

Hi All, Curious if anyone has noticed significant discrepancies between what Comcast/Xfinity thinks they've used (bandwidth wise) and what your router reports? I'm using Unifi gear (USG), and DPI is telling me this month I've used 363GB of bandwidth. Comcast, on the other hand, says 504GB. This is a whopping 32.5% difference. Someone mentioned in the Ubiquiti forums that this could be due to traffic that comes in, but the router rejects (which Comcast would see as traffic, but the router wouldn't), but 141GB seems like a lot of errant/rogue traffic. I'm a little concerned, but I'm also pretty confident that if I call out Comcast on this, It's just going to fall on deaf ears ("Our system is right, your's is wrong"). Thoughts?

Weird Issue going on with internet...And I'm okay with it.

I'm paying for 150mbps down and rarely have any issues with it. In the past month or so, I've noticed that the internet has been really fast. Anyway, after running the speed test, I noticed that I'm consistently getting about double down for what I'm paying for. I check my modem status, which is normally running 16 channels, is now running 32. Believe me, I'm not complaining. My bill hasn't increased. Just wondering if anyone knows what's going on. Maybe getting ready for another ISP/fiber to come in and decided to up the service maybe?

online gaming help!!!

I have comcast 1 gig down really 940 to 980 almost all the time and i have 30mbps up mostly 40 to 42 mbps almost all the time. About 6yrs ago i had comcast 25 down and i think 5 up but mosty 7 up. I am an avid online gamer. 6yrs ago i used to win almost all the time on Call of Duty multiplayer online gaming. About 5 yrs ago something changed i went to the 75 down and 10 up tier. I want to say almost all the time my connection and speed are consistent. Since 5 yrs ago it is like something happend to my internet i can't win any online games. It is like i am laggy even though my connection is steady. I am wired to my pc. I don't use any gaming systems like xbox or play station just pc only for gaming. 1 yr and a half ago i upgraded to 1 gig down and 30 gig up service. I have called them multiple times and called the customer serverice vice president number and have tried all sorts of stuff to see what is wrong with my connection. I have had new cable lines or coaxial cable placed to my house. I have newest motorola docsis sb8200 modem connectied to my asus rt-ac3100 router to my pc wired. When i play online games it does not matter which game i am using i am like a quarter of a second behind the other players. If you can take me at my word i am a very professional player. I play mostly batterfield and call of duty black ops games since the beginning. I live in Neptune Beach Florida. Where i live i have only two choices of ISP's. AT&T and Comcast. They do not offer fiber where i live except Comcast 2gbps up and down service but i don't have 299.99 per month to speed on that. I know the games that i play do not use anywhere near my speeds only probably at maximum 4kbps up and 4kbps down if that. So i am way overpowered or overspeed for the games that i play. Like i said used to win almost all the time, but now i lose almost all that time. Here is the funny thing i have several gaming computers and each one does the same thing. So i don't want you all to blame my PC's, I have 5 gaming pc's that i have built and practice on all of them. My problem is this....I go to my friends house who is 3 miles away and play on his computer which is exactly the same as the one i just built and win almost all the time on his computer. He has comcast 75 down and 10 up which he really gets 90 to 92 down and 11 to 12 up due to over provisioning. I have been going to his house over the past 3yrs and win almost all the time on his internet but when i come home to mine i have severe gaming loss vs wins and my internet is 980 down and 42 up. There was a tech that checked the lines down my neighborhood and said there was a problem with my neighbors underground cable 2 house down from me. He said he was going to dig it up and fix it but they never did. I called them up about it an nothing ever came about it. I am lost why do i win at my friends house with the same computer build like mine i win almost all the time. But at my house i lose almost all the time. Who do i talk with on comcast to get this figured out and fixed. Comcast said there is nothing wrong with my connection but i still believe that there is a problem on my line somewhere. Need help....can someone help me.....or does anyone know of a 3rd party company that i could pay to come check my lines beside comcast. I am really lost. Does anyone know if i can buy a docsis 3.1 modem now. The reason why i ask. I heard the new modems have AQM. Can some one please help me?

Will a DOCSIS 3.0 modem work if on a DOCSIS 3.1 node?

My node is getting expanded. If it gets DOCSIS 3.1 service, will a DOCSIS 3.0 modem still work on it? I know you would need a 3.1 to get the highest tier packages but would 3.0 still be work?

TiVo to X1--costs?

So, I tried to get this question answered through Comcast but their support person couldn't understand what I was trying to do. They thought I had X1 already and just wanted to swap out for a new X1 box. Here's my question: I have a TiVo with a CableCard. It's dying, I think, and I'm starting to plan out my path forward. I have two TVs and two CableCards, although one of the cards isn't really being used (I got it for an HDHomeRun setup that isn't being used) it's important from a billing perspective--Comcast has me at two outlets right now. I am considering just dumping TiVo and going to X1 so it'll be better integrated with their app and the fact that TiVo's financial stability is questionable and I might as well get off the train rather than buy a new box. So, I want to turn in my two CableCards and get an X1 DVR and a non-DVR X1 set top that can watch recordings from my DVR for the second room. I'm currently in an X1 Triple Play Bundle, which my bill describes as including "Anyroom DVR Service" and "HD Technology Fee". I have a $9.95 fee for the second outlet and a -$5.00 customer owned equipment credit My ultimate question is: if I swap the two cable cards for X1 boxes, what happens to my bill? Am I only on the hook for the $5 credit for the cablecards going away? Will additional rental fees be included as well? Are they going to add some "X1 DVR" fee at like $20 like I'd see from Dish or Charter in the past? Additional questions that I thought of while writing this: Can I just go swap this out in an office, without a truck roll? Are there certain models of boxes that are better than others that I should request? (I'm in Metro Atlanta if that matters)

[Speed] 300/20 business pkg - speeds - Netgear CM1000 thoughts?

I dunno how many of you are business customers (like myself) and have the 300/20 package, but I consistently get 360/28 with below a 15ms ping time. I pay $198 a month with 5 'statics' and am considering upgrading this DPC3941B device with a DOCSIS 3.1 Netgear CM1000 so I can ditch the lease fee and hopefully have a tad more options...as in being able to use my Linux box with ClearOS or Zentyal to handle routing/gateway/firewall/server concerns. My intention of course is to increase my bandwidth to a 1Gbit symmetrical connection as I do a lot of Linux programming for many distros and would like the upload bandwidth for ISO uploads. Unfortunately CCast does NOT offer a 500Mbit or 750Mbit package (300 to 1Gbit only) and anything lower than 1Gbit would be asymmetrical. One problem: $399.9x a month for Gbit service !! Anyone have the latest Netgear CM1000 modem only? It was either this one or the newest Motorola modem only. Tim ARS N9NU I need to investigate this site's test suite. Will provide those results. http://www.speedtest.net/result/7831777122 [att=1]

[WiFi] Hotspot dropping Internet after 15-20 minutes

For over a year when visiting a relative who has no Internet, I've been able to successfully connect to a nearby Xfinity hotspot with no trouble. Lately, however - maybe the last 3-4 weeks - my phone will connect like always to the hotspot but after a period of time (15-20 minutes) I lose Internet connectivity over wifi. Today, I brought my laptop with me to try and pin this down some more (I'm better troubleshooting on Windows than Android) and the same exact thing happens. Can authenticate and connect to the Xfinity hotspot but Internet drops very shortly. Sometimes it will sporadically go in and out for a few minutes, and pop up a message that it failed to obtain an IP address, and then a few minutes after that it will connect but say that the Internet may not be available, and then no browsing at all. (DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NO_INTERNET) Or, I can't browse a site directly (DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN) but I can get to it via Google search. I tried the things listed here and still no help: https://errorcodespro.com/error-code-dns_probe_finished_nxdomain/ This only happens when I'm visiting him - I have absolutely no wifi issues anywhere else, including Xfinity hotspots, with either my phone or my laptop. I have Performance plan so should be covered that way, right? My relative has no other visitors with Xfinity credentials, or at least any who might have noticed a drop. I've run out of things to troubleshoot. Could it be that the public hotspot on the closest Xfinity modem/router is flaking out? Who knows where that could be - it's a multi-unit dwelling. Is there a way to permanently "forget" that particular router and hope there's a different one nearby? Any tips much appreciated - thanks!

Can you own your own modem with home security? I've seen some things saying you have to get a netgear from Comcast in order for it to work.

New service install coax distance question

Building a new house and we are scheduled to move in early January. Xfinity is available at the street and my home is ~250' from the street. I'm installing 2" PVC conduit with a pull string. I need to know if Xfinity will pull the RG11 or RG6 through the conduit or should I? Is 250' near the limit of coax to provide reliable internet and CATV? Thanks

Does Xfinity require MAC cloning on router?

I installed a Netgear CM600 modem and a TP-Link router today, replacing a leased Xfinity modem. While setting up the router, I chose the do-NOT clone the modem MAC address option on the router and it is working. Did I do it right or does Xfinity require cloning of the WAN MAC on your router - and I should change it to clone the MAC?
